Beaulieu Village

Highlight • Historical Site

Beaulieu is a charming village located in the heart of the New Forest National Park.

There are plenty of wonderful things to discover in Beaulieu, such as a 13th-century Abbey, a stately home, many fantastic restaurants, cafés, and independent shops, and of course the famous Beaulieu Motor Museum, which homes an impressive collection of modern and vintage cars, including some of the original cars that have appeared in major movies such as James Bond and Harry Potter.

The first naval vessel built on the Beaulieu River (called Salisbury) was launched in 1698, and is thought to have been built here at Bailey's Hard. You will also notice a brick building here with a tall chimney - this is the old estate brickworks, built in 1790: it made bricks, tiles and pipes.

There is an information board provided here, and the views on the riverside are spellbinding, particularly at sunrise and sunset!

Buckler's Hard

Highlight • Viewpoint

Bucklers Hard is a tiny hamlet on the edge of the Beaulieu River famed for its shipbuilding history. From the early 18th century, a variety of impressive ships were built here, including HMS Surprise and HMS Agamemnon, Napoleon's supposed favourite ship.

During the Second World War, torpedo boats were built here and in non-military history, it was the start and end point for Sir Francis Chichesters solo round-the-world voyage with Gypsy Moth IV.

Today, there's a maritime museum here with fascinating stories and artefacts.

April 19, 2024,Bucklers Hard to Beaulieu with nature reserve diversions by riverside
Easy riverside walk. We did it in both directions having parked @ Bucklers Hard. Worth diverting into the two nature reserves that trail next to the estuary, parallel to the main path. Tea and scones good @ Beaulieu House cafe.
