Hiking

This 7-kilometer round trip takes you through the "village," as the Heisingen district is affectionately called by its residents. No wonder, it is a manageable size and beautifully situated. You start at the "Baldeneysee" bus stop.

From there, you walk along the shore of the Baldeneysee to the headframe of the former Carl Funke mine. It is one of the few structural relics of the mine, which was in operation until 1973. Shortly afterwards, you will see how its workers lived as you pass the Carl Funke settlement, which was built around the turn of the last century and still impresses today with its architectural unity and its location above the Ruhr valley.

From there, you go straight through the center of Heisingen with its old town hall and back downhill to the Ruhr. The next highlight awaits there: the Heisingen House, the oldest parts of which were built in the 12th century. From there you walk on to the Geological Wall, which shows how the Ruhr area is constructed "underground", because this is where the coal actually comes out of the wall. You can also see entrances to original tunnels.

Before you return to the destination, the "Baldeneysee" bus stop, you pass the "Heisinger Bogen" bird sanctuary, which was created when the Baldeneysee was created. If you look closely, you will see rare bird species and even turtles. This village route couldn't end more beautifully.

Trail Reviews

Martina
March 3, 2024, 🌸Frühling in Heisingen🌸

Today we went to Heisingen in beautiful spring weather. The part through the city wasn't that spectacular, but the water was nice. 😎

The starting point was the Baldeneysee bus stop. An uneventful hike led past the headframe of the former Carl Funke coal mine towards the center of Heisingen. Everything you need for daily life is available here. The trail continued along the Ruhr River with a view of the former railway bridge; this bridge has been closed to pedestrians and cyclists since the end of January due to its poor condition. The wooden structure is to be replaced – the end date of the construction work is uncertain. Finally, the Baldeneysteig trail led me through the Heisinger Bogen bird sanctuary.

On a nice day, this place is sure to be packed. Even today, you could see the activity on the lake. The best place to be is at one of the locations right on the lake, for example, Extrablatt.
