Hiking
This circular hike, which is a good 23 kilometers long, is pure summit pleasure with lots of views and even more endorphins. Because at the end – the name of the hike says it all – you will have gained a lot of altitude. But even if you don't have that much time right now: this hike can be excellently divided into two parts for your planning. The North Chain is a bit shorter with just under ten kilometers than the good 13-kilometer South Chain.
You start at the train station in Pommelsbrunn and first hike on the South Chain to the Mühlkopf, the first highlight of the hike. Then it goes up to the summit of the Hochberg. Along the way, you will notice the information boards about the prehistoric Celtic acropolis on the Hochberg. The descent through the rock labyrinth leads through a wild and romantic section with bizarre rock formations, but also requires surefootedness.
Continue to the Arzlohe chapel ruin, the summit of the Kupferberg, and finally to the Hohler Fels viewpoint. The panorama over the Happurg reservoir and the surrounding area is sensational. Continue to the Houbrig ring wall, from which you have a great view across to the landscape of the North Chain. Through Reckenberg and beautiful orchards, you finally hike down to Pommelsbrunn, where you can immediately connect to the hike on the North Chain.
You leave the town heading northwest and climb a beautiful path to the Lichtenstein castle ruins. During a short break, you can enjoy the magnificent view of the Pegnitz valley. Continue through shady forest to the summit of the Leitenberg and then back down again. First through forest with wide clearings, later through meadows and then through orchards.
At Appelsberg, you hike up again, cross the Hofberg and enjoy the view from the Zankelstein. A short spur path leads you here to a magnificent viewpoint – you just need to be surefooted.
From the Zankelstein, you can already see Pommelsbrunn, the destination of your hike. Just a short downhill path and you have reached the train station.

Even though I have already hiked a lot around Pommelsbrunn, the fantastic area with its steep climbs, narrow paths in the secluded forest and the magnificent views never ceases to amaze me.

I set off at around 6:30 a.m. knowing that it will be a sunny day. I have a two-hour drive ahead of me …
