Hiking
Spielberg, the starting point of the second stage, is located right on the edge of the Franconian Jura plateau. Accordingly, from today onwards it will slowly become more mountainous. Right at the beginning, a gentle climb up a wooded ridge awaits you. You follow the course of the mountain ridge to the Yellow Mountain. This is a striking and unforested mountaintop. From the dry meadows on the Yellow Mountain you have a fantastic view of the hilly landscape below you.
When you've had your fill of the panorama, follow the signposted Altmühltal Panoramaweg further south. The path runs directly along the edge of the forest and you can enjoy the beautiful view over an open field landscape. After a small section of forest you reach the community of Wolfsbronn, where you can take a break in an inn.
Shortly afterwards, a unique natural experience awaits you. In the middle of the forest you come across the stone gully. On a stone wall almost one meter high and overgrown with moss, a watercourse rushes down the valley in a gully. The amazing thing about it: the stone channel was created without human intervention. The very calcareous water leaves behind tiny lime deposits every year and so the wall grew to its current size over centuries.
On your further path you hike through quiet forests and along hilly meadows with beautiful views. When you arrive at the stage destination Treuchtlingen, you will meet the Altmühl again, which flows peacefully through the valley.
You can easily reach the starting point of your hike using public transport. Simply take the train from Munich, Nuremberg or Würzburg to Treuchtlingen. There you change to the regional train, which will take you to Gunzenhausen. From there you can take bus number 649 to the starting point of your hike. The departure is more straightforward, the train station in Treuchtlingen offers rail connections to the starting point in Gunzenhausen as well as to Munich, Ingolstadt, Würzburg and Nuremberg.
