Celtic Path – Donau-Auen National Park

Karst rocks, special plant species and views that stretch for miles: On the Celtic Trail you hike from Hainburg over six kilometers to the almost 350 meter high plateau of the Braunsberg, the last foothills of the Carpathians to the west.

From the parking lot near the Donaucafé you climb over karst rocks to the upper Danube circular path. Past small dry grass areas where dwarf irises bloom in spring, you follow the narrow path through a sparse stand of heavenly trees, pimpernel and hawthorn. After you have crossed Braunsbergstrasse, you continue uphill. Once at the top, you reach the Braunsberg plateau and an impressive 360-degree panorama opens up to you.

Particularly in spring, botanical rarities such as feather grass and carnations thrive around the Celtic Lair, and in late summer, praying mantises and red spiders impress. After a long rest, you leave the plateau to the east and dive into a loose forest with downy oaks and field maples. You walk leisurely through the vineyards at the foot of the Braunsberg towards the mountain bath and over the rocks back to the Danube.
