The standard route from the 4WD Nellie Creek trailhead is approximately 7.8 to 7.95 miles round-trip and usually takes about 7 to 10 hours to complete. If you have to walk the additional 4 miles (one-way) of the Nellie Creek road due to not having a high-clearance 4WD vehicle, expect the hike to be significantly longer, around 15.8 miles round-trip, and take much more time.
This trail is generally rated as 'strenuous-difficult' and is not recommended for beginners. It involves significant elevation gain, rugged terrain, and sections of Class 2+ scrambling near the summit. Proper acclimatization to altitude and good physical fitness are essential for a safe and enjoyable experience.
You'll encounter diverse and rugged terrain. The lower sections feature moderate grades through meadows and spruce-fir forests. As you ascend, the path transitions to rocky gullies, steep switchbacks, and eventually a narrow, rocky south ridge with some exposure. The most challenging part involves a scramble up a steep, eroded slope of loose rock and scree near the summit, which may require using your hands for balance.
The trail offers consistently stunning panoramic views. You'll pass through lush mountain meadows, alongside Nellie Creek, and get expansive views of Uncompahgre Peak's distinctive summit block. Higher up, vistas expand to include Matterhorn and Wetterhorn Peaks, Courthouse Mountain, and the vast San Juan Mountain range. The summit itself, Uncompahgre Peak, provides breathtaking 360-degree views. You'll also traverse Nellie Creek Basin.
The primary trailhead is at the end of the Nellie Creek 4WD road. However, this road is notoriously rough and requires a high-clearance 4WD vehicle. If you don't have such a vehicle, you'll need to park lower down and walk the additional 4 miles (one-way) up the road to reach the main trailhead, significantly increasing your hike's distance and elevation gain.
Yes, the Uncompahgre Peak Trail is generally dog-friendly. However, it's crucial to keep your dog on a leash, especially in the Uncompahgre Wilderness, and be prepared for the rugged terrain, including loose rock and potential exposure, which can be challenging for some dogs. Always pack out all waste.
The best time to hike is typically from late June or early July through September, after the snow has melted and before new snow arrives. Summer offers vibrant wildflowers, but be prepared for potential afternoon thunderstorms, which are common in the Rockies. Always check the weather forecast before heading out.
No, there are generally no permits or entrance fees required to hike the Uncompahgre Peak Trail within the Uncompahgre Wilderness. However, always check the latest regulations with the local forest service or land management agency before your trip, as rules can change.
Given the trail's difficulty and high altitude, you should bring plenty of water, high-energy snacks, sun protection (hat, sunscreen, sunglasses), rain gear, extra layers of clothing (even in summer), a first-aid kit, a map and compass or GPS device, and sturdy hiking boots. Trekking poles can also be very helpful for stability on the rocky sections.
Yes, the route primarily follows the Uncompahgre Peak Trail 239. It also passes through sections of the Big Blue Creek Trail 232 and the Ridge Stock Driveway Trail 233, as well as an Informal Connector.
Uncompahgre Peak is notable for being the sixth-highest fourteener in Colorado and the tallest in the San Juan Mountains. Its summit has a unique, flat, and tilted rocky pinnacle, often described as a 'lopsided wedding cake.' Despite its formidable appearance, the standard hiking route is surprisingly accessible for experienced hikers without requiring technical climbing gear, offering spectacular 360-degree panoramic views from the top.
