In this 55 kilometer ring, discover the landscape and wildlife route of the Po delta. For the entire itinerary, the slow rhythm of the waterways around the island of Ariano accompanies you, pedaling along paths and secondary roads. The name of the island of Ariano derives from Adria, an ancient city and old portico on the Adriatic Sea. This territory was once marshy and lagoon-like.
Start from Ariano, a small village surrounded by high embankments. Climb onto one of them and cycle along the Po di Goro and its meanders, from the other bank you can see Emilia Romagna. After seven kilometers you arrive at the Po di Venezia, the oldest and still active branch, built by the Venetians in the 17th century.
Continue along the Po di Venezia with its sinuous course for approximately 27 kilometres. You pass through the village of Tagli di Po, which owes its name to the river work that the Venetians carried out between 1600 and 1604 to save the Venetian lagoon from floods. To discover even more about the history of the area, you could visit the regional reclamation museum of Ca' Vendramin which is located at kilometer 37 between the Po di Donzella and the Po di Goro.
For the last 15 kilometers or so you pedal following the meandering Po di Goro. From the other bank you can glimpse the village of Mesola and the imposing castle, one of the delights of the Este family. The route ends back at the start, in Ariano
