This loop is rated as easy overall, but it includes sections that are significantly more challenging. The San Pablo Ridge Trail, in particular, is considered "Difficult" for mountain biking due to steep grades, some reaching up to 30%. While the initial parts along Wildcat Creek Trail are gentle, the ascents on the Mezue Trail and San Pablo Ridge Trail require strong climbing abilities.
The terrain is quite varied. You'll start on a wide, paved road along Wildcat Creek, which transitions to a gravel road. Further along, you'll encounter broad fire roads and dirt trails. The Mezue Trail climbs through open grasslands, while the San Pablo Ridge Trail features steep, challenging sections. The route also winds through oak/bay woodlands, eucalyptus groves, and live oaks. Be aware that some sections, especially on the Mezue and San Pablo Ridge trails, can become muddy in winter.
This loop offers spectacular panoramic views, including expansive vistas of the surrounding hills, gorgeous San Francisco Bay views, and northeast Contra Costa. From the ridge, you can often see San Pablo Reservoir, Sobrante Ridge, Mount Tamalpais, and even downtown San Francisco behind the Bay Bridge. Look out for the 360-degree viewpoint. Unique features include stands of eucalyptus, live oaks, bay laurels, and a distinctive grove of palm trees near the Belgum Trail. You can also explore the scenic bench overlook near an Old Nike Missile Radar Site and the ruins of the Belgum Grande Vista Sanitarium.
Riding the loop counterclockwise is often recommended for mountain bikers, as it allows for a "blazingly fast descent" on the steep sections of the San Pablo Ridge Trail. If ridden clockwise, these sections become a rigorous climb.
Spring is an excellent time to visit, as the hills are green and adorned with wildflowers. However, the trail can be enjoyed year-round. Be mindful that some sections, particularly on the Mezue Trail and San Pablo Ridge Trail, can become very muddy and even impassable in winter due to deep mud.
The loop is located within Wildcat Canyon Regional Park. Parking is typically available at the main trailheads within the park, such as the one near the beginning of the Lower Wildcat Creek Canyon Trail.
Generally, there are no specific permits required for mountain biking this trail, nor are there entrance fees for Wildcat Canyon Regional Park. However, it's always a good idea to check the official East Bay Regional Park District website for the most current regulations and any potential changes before your visit.
Yes, Wildcat Canyon Regional Park is generally dog-friendly. Dogs are typically allowed on trails, but they must be kept on a leash in developed areas and under voice control in undeveloped areas. Always clean up after your pet and respect park regulations.
Yes, this route is part of a larger network. It includes sections of the East Bay Skyline National Recreation Trail, the Mezue Trail, the San Pablo Ridge Trail, and the Belgum Trail. It also intersects with the Wildcat Creek Trail and is part of the larger East Bay Skyline National Trail, an American Discovery Trail, and the Mokelumne Coast to Crest Trail.
While the trail itself is mostly undeveloped, Wildcat Canyon Regional Park does have facilities. You can find restrooms and water at designated areas within the park, such as near Camp Alvarado & Elderberry. It's always advisable to carry enough water for your ride, especially on warmer days.
