The Monte San Giorgio loop is a moderate hike that typically takes around 4 hours and 30 minutes to complete. The tour data suggests a duration of approximately 2 hours and 35 minutes for the specific route described, covering about 5.6 km.
This trail is rated as moderate. While much of the path is accessible, it requires good fitness and sure-footedness, especially on steeper sections. Beginners with some hiking experience and good physical condition should be able to manage it.
The trail officially starts from the Serpiano cable car station. You can reach the cable car from Brusino Arsizio, where parking is available. The cable car itself offers a scenic ride to the trailhead.
The terrain is quite varied, offering a diverse hiking experience. You'll encounter broad mule tracks shaded by dense forests, steeper forest paths, and sections crossing open meadows. There are also dirt roads and narrow, winding lanes if you explore nearby villages. The final stretch to the summit of Monte San Giorgio is described as quite steep.
The trail offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Ticino Alps, Lake Lugano, Monte San Salvatore, and Monte Generoso from the summit. You'll also pass through charming natural settings, including the ancient chestnut groves at Alpe di Brusino, and can spot an Abandoned Building at Alpe Forello. Don't miss the View of Lake Lugano from Monte San Giorgio.
The trail is enjoyable for much of the year. The grotto at Alpe di Brusino, which serves regional specialties, is open from April to October, suggesting this period is ideal for hiking and enjoying local amenities. Always check weather conditions before you go, especially for winter hiking.
While specific leash rules are not detailed, many trails in Switzerland are dog-friendly. It's generally advisable to keep dogs on a leash, especially in areas with wildlife or livestock, and to clean up after them. Always ensure your dog is fit enough for a moderate hike.
Hiking the Monte San Giorgio loop trail itself does not require a permit or entrance fee, as it's a natural area. However, if you plan to visit attractions like the Fossil Museum in Meride, there will be an entrance fee. The entire Monte San Giorgio region is a UNESCO World Heritage site, recognized for its geological significance.
Yes, this route also passes through sections of the Sentiero Lago di Lugano and the Trans Swiss Trail.
Yes, you can find refreshments along the way. The grotto at Alpe di Brusino serves regional specialties from April to October. Additionally, there is a bivouac on Monte San Giorgio that offers shelter and drinks.
For this moderate hike, you should pack appropriate hiking shoes, layers of clothing suitable for changing weather, water, snacks, sun protection, and a map or GPS device. Given the varied terrain and potential for steep sections, trekking poles can also be helpful.
I recorded this on the way down, so you should actually start at B - this is where I parked my car, at the restaurant there. The whole way up, around 1.5hours, is wooded and as such you don’t see any view at all! Only when you get to the summit do you get to see this beautiful panoramic mountainous vista. It is absolutely breathtaking once you get there! The stones and leaves on the ground are a bit slippery so wear good shoes and be careful not to trip. I would say this is intermediate to advanced hiking.
