The Promenade des Troufferies loop generally takes about 1 hour and 43 minutes to complete. This can vary depending on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the scenery.
This trail is considered an easy hike, suitable for all skill levels and fitness levels. It features easily-accessible paths with relatively low elevation changes, making it a pleasant walk for most.
The starting point for the Promenade des Troufferies loop is typically from the hamlet of Roumont, near Ochamps, adjacent to the Libramont-Libin road. You can also start specifically at the Château de Roumont, where parking is usually available.
The terrain features a unique 'humid and fragile environment' that was once an ancient peat bog area. You'll walk through bogs ('fanges'), birch woods ('bois de bouleaux'), and clearings ('clairières'). There's also a notable Boardwalk Through the Peat Bog, offering a distinct experience.
Along the Promenade des Troufferies, you can discover the unique ecosystem of the Les Troufferies Nature Reserve, observe wildlife in the Peat Bogs, and enjoy panoramic views from the Bench With Panoramic View and the View of Les Troufferies de Libin. The Château de Roumont is also a notable landmark near the starting point.
While the trail passes through the Réserve Naturelle Les Troufferies, dogs are generally permitted. However, to protect the fragile ecosystem and local wildlife, it's essential to keep your dog on a leash at all times and ensure you clean up after them.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Promenade des Troufferies loop within the Réserve Naturelle Les Troufferies. The reserve is freely accessible to the public, but visitors are expected to respect the natural environment and follow general nature reserve guidelines.
The trail can be enjoyed year-round, but spring and autumn are particularly beautiful. Spring brings fresh greenery and blooming plants, while autumn offers vibrant colors. Be aware that during wetter periods, some sections of the former peat bog area might be muddy, so appropriate footwear is recommended.
Yes, approximately 32% of the Promenade des Troufferies route overlaps with sections of the 'Entre Lesse et Lomme' trail, offering a chance to experience parts of a broader regional network.
The Les Troufferies Nature Reserve is unique due to its historical and ecological significance. The term 'Troufferies' refers to its past as peat bogs, where peat was extracted until the 1930s. This history has shaped a rare and distinct ecosystem characteristic of the Ardennes region, offering a peaceful immersion in a preserved natural setting.
Yes, the path is clearly marked with a yellow rectangle, making it easy to follow the loop without getting lost.
4/5 bis Ochamps - Libin Dessert walk After our historic morning walk 14-18 in Anloy we need a peaceful walk in an idyllic landscape at Ochamps – Libin 'Les Troufferies'. We park our steel car in the backyard of the 20th century Château de Roumont and enjoy tea time with cake. We discover the nature reserve 'Les Troufferies' via a marked walk (yellow rectangle). Peat was cut in this vast area from the Middle Ages until 1930. Peat was a valuable fuel and the precursor to coal and petroleum. During this walk you can see how nature has overcome exploitation. An extensive peat area remained, very remarkable both in size and biodiversity. Where once there was human activity you can now taste the silence. Tomorrow, last day in Le Pays de la Haute-Lesse et la Lomme 5/5 Grupont Witch Walk & Witch Tours.
