This moderate loop typically takes around 2 hours and 37 minutes to complete. However, allow extra time to enjoy the scenic views and points of interest along the way.
The terrain is varied, featuring sections of old mule trails, ancient stone buildings, asphalt, gravel, and natural paths. You can expect some winding mountain paths and potentially narrow, lumpy, dirt, and stone sections. The initial climb out of Tenero can include a series of stone steps.
Yes, this specific loop is rated as moderate and is generally suitable for all skill levels, provided you have good basic fitness. The paths are considered easily accessible, though some sections involve climbing.
The trail typically starts in Tenero. While specific parking details for this exact loop are not provided, Tenero offers various parking options. It's advisable to check local parking availability in Tenero before your visit.
You'll encounter diverse scenery, from quaint Ticinese neighborhoods and views of Lake Maggiore to the rugged beauty of the Verzasca Valley. Highlights include a View of Tenero and Lake Maggiore from Contra, and the impressive Verzasca Dam, famous for the GoldenEye Bungee Jump. You'll also see ancient stone buildings, chapels, and the emerald green waters of the Verzasca River.
The Verzasca Valley generally welcomes dogs on trails. However, given the varied terrain which includes narrow paths and stone steps, ensure your dog is accustomed to such conditions. Always keep your dog on a leash and clean up after them.
The best time to hike is typically from spring through autumn (April to October). During these months, the weather is generally pleasant, and the trails are clear. Winter hiking is possible but requires checking conditions for snow and ice, especially on higher or shaded sections.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike this trail. Access to the natural areas and the Verzasca Dam is generally free.
Yes, sections of this route overlap with other trails. You may find yourself on parts of the Contra, Tenero - Gordemo, or Biasca - Cannero paths, among others.
Yes, the emerald green waters of the Verzasca River are known for forming natural swimming pools. While the water is glacially cold, popular spots like the area around Ponte dei Salti (further into the valley from the dam) are frequented by swimmers during warmer months.
Given the moderate difficulty and varied terrain, we recommend sturdy hiking shoes, water, snacks, sun protection, and appropriate layers of clothing. A camera is also a good idea to capture the stunning views.
Comments
This route is always ideal at any time of year. In summer, however, it is recommended to do it early in the morning or in the evening as otherwise it gets very hot climbing the many stairs.

Today we went from Camping Tamaro via Contra to the Verzasca Dam – up many stairs, and then down some. The impressive scenery at the dam was a real highlight halfway through, accompanied by a wonderful atmosphere along the way.
