Ancient pictographs, an impressive gorge with a waterfall and the majestic Green River – the Jones Hole Trail is one of the longest trails in the Dinosaur National Monument and is rarely visited. It takes you through beautiful grasslands and past fragrant sagebrush.
The trail starts at the Jones Hole Fish Hatchery, where you can also park. The trail soon winds through a beautiful gorge, where you can find some shade even on hot summer days. After just under 3 kilometres (1.9 mi), you have the opportunity to take a detour to the Ely Creek waterfall, which can also be visited on the way back. There's also a campsite here, but you'll need a permit to spend the night in the hinterland.
You'll reach the banks of the turquoise-blue Green River after 6 kilometres (3.7 mi). With a bit of luck, you'll come across water hikers gliding across the river in rafting boats or kayaks. You can also cool off your feet in the clear river water before returning along the same route.
