Swelter Shelter Trail – Dinosaur National Monument

At just a few hundred metres, the trail to Swelter Shelter is only a flying visit. Despite its brevity, however, there are some exciting things to discover here. As in many places in the Dinosaur National Monument, the Fremont people also left rock carvings here. However, the centrepiece of the trail is the eponymous Swelter Shelter.
The trail starts at a car park directly on Blue Mountain Road. From a distance, you can already make out a low stone wall built into the rock. At Swelter Shelter, you’ll find a water basin in a large rock and numerous petroglyphs and pictograms on the stone walls in the immediate vicinity.
The rock art comes from the Fremont people who lived here for a long time. However, the site was also used by much older cultures dating back to 7000 BC. Take your time at this site to explore the drawings of human and animal figures at length.
