This route is considered difficult, requiring good to very good fitness. It's a challenging high-alpine climb with significant elevation gain. The average grade is around 5.4%, but sections can be steeper, with the steepest quarter-mile reaching 10.9%.
The roadway is generally in excellent condition. The climb can be broken into three parts: a challenging first 3.5 miles (6.7% grade), a milder middle 5 miles (2.9% grade), and a steep final 2.3 miles with switchbacks (7.4% grade).
The best time to cycle is typically from late May to late November, as the pass is closed during winter months. Spring and summer offer abundant wildflowers, while September and early October are popular for brilliant fall foliage.
You'll start in the historic Town of Georgetown, then ascend through a canyon, passing lakes and a reservoir. As you climb, the scenery transitions from dense forests to breathtaking high-alpine tundra. Near the summit, you'll be above the treeline with spectacular views, including Mount Bierstadt and glimpses of Mount Blue Sky. The route also offers a nice Viewpoint of Georgetown and follows the scenic Guanella Pass Road.
Parking is available in the Town of Georgetown. As traffic on the pass is typically mild, finding a suitable spot to begin your ride should be manageable.
No specific permits or entrance fees are required for cycling the Guanella Pass Road itself, as it is a public National Scenic Byway. However, the route is within the Arapaho National Forest, so be aware of general forest regulations if you venture off the main road.
While the road itself is open to all, it's a high-traffic cycling route. If you plan to bring a dog, ensure they are well-behaved, on a leash, and can handle the strenuous elevation gain and potential vehicle traffic. Always practice Leave No Trace principles.
Given the high-alpine environment and significant elevation gain, you should bring plenty of water, high-energy snacks, layers of clothing (weather can change rapidly), sun protection, and essential bike repair tools. A helmet is mandatory.
No, Guanella Pass Road is typically closed during the winter months, usually from late November until late May, due to snow and ice. Always check current road conditions before planning your trip.
