A real highlight at the end of my Valais trip – this tour is definitely one of my personal top ten most beautiful bike tours. From Arolla, the trail initially climbed gently, with a few steeper climbs, up to an alpine pasture at 2,500 m. The rest of the ascent to the hut was mostly manageable, although we had to carry the bike at times. From there, we climbed another 400 meters on foot, partly pushing, partly carrying. We tackled the last 80 meters to the summit without our bikes. The descent over the moraine was a natural flow trail at its finest: grippy scree, lots of curves – a perfect introduction. Further down, the trail became more technical, mostly at S2 level, with an exciting mix of hard rock and flowy sections. It was great fun all the way to the bottom.
It took me a lot longer and although I'm not inexperienced and I'm in good shape, I can't recommend the tour for mountain bikers. It's only 50% rideable with very good riding technique. And it's very strenuous because of the elevation. To put it simply (I've just completed my 6th Transalb). Great hiking route but a lot of steep gravel.
