Gravel riding

Attention gravel fans! On this tour I'll take you to the Strada dell'Assietta in Piedmont, Italy. Hardly any other gravel road in the Alps is as popular as this unique ridge road, which runs at an altitude of 2,000 to 2,500 meters and offers spectacular views of the Pelvoux massif and Mont Chaberton.

It starts in Sestrière. Your gravel fun begins just a few kilometers from the gates of the famous winter sports resort. If you happen to be here on a Wednesday or Saturday in July or August, you're particularly lucky. Because then the Strada dell’Assietta is closed to cars and motorcycles.

Over a length of around 30 kilometers, you whiz through the enchanting Alpine landscape, climb the Colle dell’Assietta and pass rustic alpine huts. Be prepared for numerous photo stops. Because the panorama is simply amazing!

When you reach kilometer 34, your adventure on the former military road is over. Then you roll down into the valley on asphalt and wind back to Sestrière on small side roads. After 60 kilometers and almost 2,000 meters of altitude you are back at the starting point.

The dirt climb from Pattemouche to Borgata for at least 50% cannot be pedaled!
For the rest, the Assietta tour is always fantastic in good weather ...
The overall altitude is almost 1700 meters probably the high pressure has deceived the altimeter and the highest point is Il Genevris at about 2510.

The day of closure to cars would have been yesterday but I tried anyway. All in all the traffic was acceptable, a few motorcyclists and about ten cars/off-road vehicles.
It is true that I left early, at 7:45 and at 14:30 I was at the car, the first motorcycles were seen at 10/11.

A circular route on the watershed between the Ghisone and Susa valleys. We start from Pourrieres, where the first and most demanding climb starts with a stretch that leads from 1,350 to 1,900 m of altitude: the first 7 km up to Pian dell'Alpe are on asphalt, at the crossroads we turn left towards Colle dell'Assietta (2472 m) on a …

Spectacular and panoramic route on one of the most fascinating roads of the western Piedmont Alps

Beautiful high-alpine gravel road, the Strada dell ‘Assietta! And the best: in July and August, no 🚗 and 🏍 are allowed on Wednesdays and Saturdays. But you are still not alone there. Lots and lots of eMTBs ...
