The Tour de Mont Gelé — Nendaz á Cabane de Mont Fort en boucle is a demanding ride. While the estimated moving time is around 6 hours and 18 minutes, given its difficult classification and challenging terrain, you should plan for a full day, potentially 8-10 hours, especially if you factor in breaks, photo stops, and sections where you might need to push your bike.
Yes, this trail is classified as difficult and demands advanced riding skills. You'll encounter steep ascents and descents, rocky passages, and narrow singletrack sections. Be prepared for parts where staying on the bike can be very challenging, especially on descents, as indicated by the VTOPO MTB grading scale.
The route covers approximately 29.5 km of paths, with a significant portion (12.7 km) being singletrack. You'll also ride on some street and road sections. Expect high alpine terrain with granite walls, gravelly moraines, and meadows. The varied landscape includes steep climbs and descents, making for a diverse and demanding ride.
The trail is a loop starting and ending in Nendaz. Specific parking details aren't provided, but Nendaz, being a prominent resort, offers various parking facilities. It's advisable to check local Nendaz tourism information for the most convenient parking near the trailhead.
This trail offers absolutely fantastic and breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding alpine landscape, including the majestic Mont Blanc massif. Key highlights you'll pass include the Col des Gentianes, the Cabane du Mont-Fort, and the Col de la Croix de Cœur. The route also provides a 360-degree view of the entire 4 Vallées ski area.
The best time to ride this high-alpine trail is typically during the summer months, from late June to early September, when the snow has melted and the weather is most stable. Always check the local weather forecast and trail conditions before heading out, as alpine weather can change rapidly.
While dogs are generally welcome on many trails in the Swiss Alps, this particular route is very challenging and long. The demanding terrain, potential for pushing bikes, and high-alpine environment might not be suitable for all dogs. If you do bring a dog, ensure they are fit for such a strenuous journey and keep them on a leash, especially in areas with livestock or wildlife.
Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to access the natural trails for mountain biking in the 4 Vallées region. However, if you plan to use any ski lifts or gondolas to access parts of the trail, you will need to purchase a ticket for those. Always respect local regulations and private property signs.
Yes, the route passes by the Cabane du Mont-Fort, which is a mountain hut offering food and accommodation. Additionally, Nendaz, as a major resort, provides numerous options for cafes, pubs, and various types of accommodation before or after your ride.
Given the trail's difficulty and remote sections, essential gear includes a well-maintained mountain bike suitable for challenging terrain, a helmet, appropriate protective gear, plenty of water and high-energy snacks, a repair kit (including spare tubes/patch kit, pump, multi-tool), a first-aid kit, navigation tools (GPS device or komoot app with offline maps), and layers of clothing suitable for changing alpine weather conditions.
Yes, the Tour de Mont Gelé — Nendaz á Cabane de Mont Fort en boucle is part of a larger network of trails in the region. Sections of this route overlap with official trails such as Enduro La Planie, 03-Chemin des Bisses, Tour du Val de Bagnes, and Col de la Chaux - Cabane Mont-Fort, among others. This allows for potential extensions or variations if you're looking for an even longer adventure.
While the route is a loop, some riders might find one direction more manageable than the other, depending on their preference for climbing or descending. Given the significant elevation gain and technical descents, consider starting early to allow ample time. Be prepared for sections where you might need to push your bike, especially on very steep or rocky ascents and descents. Pacing yourself and taking breaks at scenic viewpoints like the Cabane du Mont-Fort is highly recommended.
A short winter interlude at 2950 meters above sea level on the Col des Gentianes above Verbier greeted us when we got off the gondola. ☃️ The ascent to Tortin has steep ramps again and again. With the ⚡️Bike this is not a problem. The battery can also be recharged at the train station. 😁 From the very top, a wide gravel road zigzags down until a wide high-altitude trail leads to the Croix de Coeur. From Croix de Coeur follows a single trail and a beautifully designed flow trail down to La Tzoumaz.
4 Valles is also a highlight in summer. There are many beautiful trails that are well maintained and lead across the beautiful Valais top ski area. Charging stations are everywhere and if you want, you can also be chauffeured up by gondola. 😁
Beautiful 🤩 Always impressive and fantastic amidst the Valais mountains. Thanks also for the great company. 😘
A bit of snowy air caught our breath 🚵♂️☀️🤩🍀🔨⛄🥇 To round off our vacation in Valais, we headed high up. Despite 30°C in the valley, it was chilly at almost 3,000 m above sea level. Passing through several small tunnels, I felt like a sausage in a freezer. The view and the feeling of freedom above the clouds warmed my soul and quickly made me forget the cold. At the Cabane du Mont Fort, we were able to enjoy a sumptuous meal in glorious sunshine. A stunning high-altitude trail above Verbier and the rapid descent from Cole de Croix de Coeur were further highlights. It's incredible what you can experience on a bike these days. 🤩
