Rhine in Flames... something we've always wanted to experience. We drove to Bad Salzig, parked there to avoid the hustle and bustle, and from there cycled to S. Goar. From the banks of the Rhine, we went straight up to Fleckertshöhe. A massive climb, but one that was rewarded with a magnificent view of the Rhine Valley. We continued on a paved forest path toward the A61. In this section, the noise level became unpleasantly high. After passing the industrial area, we arrived in Emmelshausen at the familiar roundabout that marks the beginning of the Schinderhannesweg. The local bakery offered us delicious plum cake to fortify us for the next few kilometers of the Schinderhannesweg. We followed this path to the end of the municipality of Pfalzfeld. From here, it was downhill again toward the Rhine Valley. The scenery was very beautiful, but due to a large, newly constructed wind farm and the associated, rough gravel forest paths, it wasn't a pleasant ride. Just before Damscheid, the road surface changed, and the further descent brought a smile to our faces. A largely deserted side valley led us to Oberwesel... great. Arriving in Oberwesel, it was already dusk, and the castles and city walls were illuminated. To our great delight, the B9 was already closed to motor traffic from Oberwesel onward, which allowed us a relaxing drive to S. Goar. Simply a dream at 27°C and no traffic. The Rhine was full of illuminated boats sailing to S. Goar. In S. Goar, the expected festival atmosphere. We enjoyed the fireworks on the banks of the Rhine with a fantastic view. Just as the fireworks ended, the forecast rain began, apparently bringing an end to the summer of 2025. Perfect timing.
The beginning of the tour is exhausting even with an e-bike. 10 km long only uphill. The effort is rewarded with magnificent views. Then it goes over the Schinderhannes cycle path in the Hunsrück, only to be led back to the Rhine a little later over lonely roads.
Take advantage of the good weather and take a tour to the Rhine. Via Damscheid, Niederburg, Urbar past the Günderodehaus down to Oberwesel.
