Cycling

Starting at the seaside in Whitby, follow peaceful back lanes and country roads through the beautiful Esk Valley into the heart of the North York Moors.

The first portion of the route takes you past the peaceful village of Ruswarp along the beautiful River Esk. Following that, past the village of Aislaby (a steeper climb up to it), you ride west across Egton Low Moor to the larger village of Egton.

Past Egton, there's a gentle climb across moorland to the magnificent viewpoint of Danby Beacon. After passing through quiet villages like Aislaby and Egton, there’s a gentle climb across moorland to the magnificent viewpoint of Danby Beacon. Your efforts are easily repaid by the view of the moorland and the sea from the top, before descending to Danby Lodge National Park Centre and on to the moorland village of Danby.

Whitby Harbour

Highlight • Historical Site

Whitby is a traditional seaside town that is dearly loved by young and old alike. With a glorious golden beach, quirky cobbled streets that wind enticingly through old taverns and pubs — frequented by sailors and smugglers in times gone by — and a bustling harbour overlooked by the striking Gothic ruins of Whitby Abbey, it is an intriguing and beautiful place. With connections to Captain Cook and Dracula, too, Whitby truly is a place unlike any other.

River Esk Road

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

A short stretch of a road east of Ruswarp, between the Ruswarp suspension bridge and Larpool Lane. The road is part of the National Cycle Network route 165. There are beautiful views of the River Esk for much of the way along here, but also of Cock Mill Beck (a tributary of the Esk). A lovely and gentle ride through a beautiful landscape.

This is one lovely village to make a stop at. The views from the High Street (particularly towards the south) are fantastic. There is a wonderful green, with a few seats and an interesting monument in memory of John Foster (although at first sight it looks like a war monument). There are pubs and inns, too, to have some food if you'd like.

The village is quieter than Egton Bridge (not that the Bridge one is Oxford Street precisely!) and makes a perfect place to stop for a bit and re-energise.

Danby Beacon

Highlight • Historical Site

Danby Beacon dates back to the 1600s, when Britain was living under the threat of French invasion. Fast forward to the 1930s and the site became one of the first radar stations built to protect the North East during the Second World War. It was functional until the 1960s.

The old wooden beacon eventually fell to ruin. However, a modern beacon has been put up in its place and serves as an important landmark in this part of Yorkshire. A blue, stainless steel basket mimics a flame, over 16 feet (5 m) above the ground. It is held aloft by a corten column, designed to reflect the colouring of the surrounding moorland.

It occupies the high ground above the villages of Danby and Lealholm and rewards with a staggering panorama on a clear day.
