Leave Pickering on a cycle path into the pretty village of Thornton-le-Dale before winding through Dalby, ‘The Great Yorkshire Forest’. On the way, you'll likely stop at the Dalby Forest Visitor Centre for a bit of flapjack and tea, we imagine, and a short distance later at the beautiful Staindale Lake, also within Dalby Forest.

Once out of Dalby Forest, the route heads through green, fertile valleys before a gradual descent to the coast. On the way, you will likely be in some awe of the rather monumental St Peter's Church in the tiny settlement of Hackness. After that, there is your last climb on this route before your first glimpse of the dramatic coastline.

Dalby Forest Visitor Centre

Highlight • Viewpoint

This is the usual place where people go when they choose to do their Dalby Forest adventures! There is a car park here, a café, tourist information, trail maps, a bike hire place and much more. This area is a dark skies area, and so there are two observatories here hosting stargazing events from time to time!

An obvious place to make a stop on your tour, particularly if you need some good coffee and much-desired flapjack.

Staindale Lake

Highlight • Lake

This is one beautiful lake, and easily accessible as a car park "sits on it" beside the blue surface of the lake's water (on a sunny day). Lots of wildlife around the lake to spot (and listen to!)

St Peter's Church, Hackness

Highlight • Monument

A somewhat ridiculously impressive church stands here in the tiny village of Hackness. St Peter's is Grade-I listed, so, clearly, I was not the only one who was impressed!

It dates back to just after the Norman invasion in the 11th century, although already in the 9th century there was a nunnery here. The highlight is a beautifully carved Anglo-Saxon cross, dated to either late 8th or early 9th century. Rest your bike somewhere and make sure to marvel at this historical gem.
