Hike from Schilpario to Nani Tagliaferri refuge

Long but not overly demanding route. The path does not present particular problems. In the last kilometres, three chains help hikers

I recommend bringing water. There are no places to fill your water bottle along the route.

The Nani Tagliaferri Refuge has always been my favourite. Maybe because as a boy he was the first. Perhaps because it is the destination of a fabulous night excursion, which I will remember for life, the fact is, my eyes light up every time I talk about it. November 21, 2022 I decide to go there after a long time. I leave late, I stop to photograph animals, I find a lot of ice and snow in the upper part and I arrive at about 2100 meters when it starts to get dark. The shelter is nearby, you can see it, but I'm alone and I prefer to go back to the car. Davide zero, Tagliaferri refuge one. Today July 13, 2023 I try again. Weather forecast not excellent, but not prohibitive either. First kilometers with very blue sky. Water everywhere, the path looks like a torrent. At the Venano di mezzo malga, the sky offers a few clouds, but they don't seem bad. At the Venano di Sopra malga I get there washed up for a few meters. A water bomb that doesn't even give you time to take out your raincoat. An hour and a half of abundant water, accompanied by hail. Luckily the shepherds, wonderful and very kind people, host me in the house. Great respect for these people who too often suffer the rudeness of Sunday hikers and for their dogs, one nicer than the other. I am advised not to continue unless necessary and I decide to walk across the wide and stupendous plateau. There are waterfalls by the hundreds that fall from the mountains that surround me. I learn that whoever tried to reach the shelter arrived wetter than a trout and worried about not having a single dry spare. However a beautiful sun, a blue sky make me decide to continue. I see the flag getting closer, but arrived at the same spot as November 2022, second water bomb. It will last an hour or more. I decide to take shelter under a boulder. I meet other people who go down and warn me that in the area of the 2 fords with chains, the water exceeds the knees. I go to the mountains to have fun, and just like in November, I throw in the towel. Davide zero, Tagliaferri refuge two. While descending, a stupendous sun came out and the flag of the refuge was really close, but perhaps it is better to let the mountain win sometimes, if the price you pay is low after all.
