Convent of the Capuchos

Highlight • Historical Site

The abandoned Capuchin monastery Convent dos Capouchos has a bit of mystique about it. The tiny cells, the small chapel, the refectory and other parts of the monastery, built in the rock and covered with cork, are evidence of the humble and hard life of the Franciscan monks who lived here. It was a worthwhile visit for which you should plan a good hour.

Mula River Dam

Highlight • Lake

The current Rio da Mula Dam, in Serra de Sintra, was built in 1969 to supply water to the city of Cascais. In 1983, the dam suffered a structural failure during heavy rains and caused extensive damage to Cascais. Restructured, today it is an excellent place to enjoy the nature and peace of the region. Mandatory stopping point for both walkers and mountain bikers.

Bridges Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

The Caminho das Pontes, or Trilho das Pontes, is a stretch that connects the Rio da Mula Dam to the Convento dos Capuchos. It gets its name because, as you can imagine, there are several bridges along the route. Route also frequently used by mountain bikers.

June 3, 2025,Vom Convento dos Capuchos zur Barragem do Rio da Mula - Rundweg im Naturpark Sintra- Cascais
Today we drove to the Convento dos Capuchos to visit the Franciscan monastery before our planned hike. We were very disappointed because when we arrived, the monastery was closed, which hadn't been indicated on the website or on any sign along the trail. 😔
So, unfortunately, the visit was canceled and we set off on the circular hike.
