Embark on the Oregon Coast Scenic Bikeway, a difficult touring bicycle route that challenges you with 4056 feet (1236 metres) of elevation gain over 42.8 miles (68.8 km). This journey, typically completed in 4 hours and 46 minutes, winds through the lush Siuslaw National Forest, offering a dynamic landscape of rugged terrain and frequent ascents. You will experience vast ocean views, encounter towering basalt sea stacks, and pass through sandy beaches, all while cycling past iconic landmarks like the Heceta Head Lighthouse Viewpoint.
When planning your ride, be aware that sections of the route require you to share the lane with vehicle traffic, particularly over older bridges. Tunnels, such as the Cape Creek tunnel, may also present challenges as they often lack shoulders, meaning you will need to ride alongside cars and trucks. This route is best suited for touring cyclists who are comfortable navigating these conditions and sharing the road with vehicles.
The Oregon Coast Scenic Bikeway offers a unique blend of natural beauty and coastal charm, connecting you with the dramatic Pacific coastline and its diverse ecosystems. As you pedal, you will discover the distinctive character of the region, from its ancient forests to its rugged shorelines, and pass through several charming coastal communities that add to the experience.

The terrain is rugged and rocky, featuring frequent ups and downs, tight curves, and rolling hills. You'll encounter a good number of longer climbs, with elevations varying between sea level and 1,000 feet. While generally paved, some sections may have narrow shoulders or require sharing the lane with vehicle traffic, especially over older bridges and through tunnels.
The route offers stunning ocean views, towering basalt sea stacks, and sandy beaches. Notable highlights include the Heceta Head Lighthouse Viewpoint, Cape Perpetua Scenic Area, and the Sea Lion Caves. You'll also pass through lush old-growth forests and charming coastal communities.
This bikeway is rated as 'difficult' and is not considered an easy ride due to its frequent elevation changes and climbs. Some sections can be very steep. It's best suited for touring cyclists comfortable with challenging terrain and riding with some vehicle traffic.
September is often recommended as an optimal time to visit due to reduced tourist traffic. Generally, riding the Oregon Coast Bike Route (which this bikeway is part of) north to south is advised to take advantage of prevailing wind patterns.
While the bikeway itself is primarily on paved roads, specific regulations for dogs may vary in adjacent parks, beaches, or trails you might access. Always check local signage for leash requirements and restrictions, especially in natural areas like state parks or beaches.
No specific permit is required to cycle the Oregon Coast Scenic Bikeway itself, as it largely follows public roads. However, if you plan to visit certain state parks or recreation areas along the route, day-use fees or parking passes might be required. As the trail is within the Siuslaw National Forest, some specific trailheads or developed recreation sites within the forest may require a recreation pass, such as the Northwest Forest Pass.
This specific segment of the Oregon Coast Scenic Bikeway runs from Florence to Cape Perpetua. You can find detailed maps and GPS files through the Oregon Scenic Bikeways program to plan your starting and ending points.
Yes, the Oregon Coast Scenic Bikeway is the primary route, covering about 90% of this tour. It also intersects with sections of the Oregon Coast Trail, Heceta Head Trail, and other smaller paths like the Valley Trail and Sutton Lake Trail.
The diverse scenery means you might spot marine mammals near the coast, nesting shorebirds, and various forest animals in the inland sections. The marine reserves, like Redfish Rocks, are particularly good for observing marine life.
Given the challenging terrain and potential for varying weather, it's advisable to bring appropriate cycling gear, layers of clothing, rain protection, plenty of water, snacks, a repair kit, and navigation tools. Be prepared for sections with limited services.
Be aware of narrow shoulders and sections where you may share the road with vehicle traffic, especially on Highway 101. Tunnels like Arch Cape feature a massive uphill climb, and Cape Creek tunnel has no shoulder, requiring extra caution. Riding north to south is generally recommended for more favorable winds.
Today there were again great views of the coast and sea lions splashing in the waves. One even surfed in the wave. We saw other bikers along the way and some actually came to the campsite. So far we have hardly ever had one at the campsite. Although the route here is extremely popular and you see a lot more than in Canada.
