Traditional Santana house at Pico das Pedras

Highlight • Monument

The small houses were formerly inhabited by the peasants, today they are usually empty and can be visited as a sight on Madeira. Typical of these houses are the triangular shape and the colors, which are mostly red and blue. The thick thatched roofs provide a very good protection against thunderstorms.

Wonderful hike. Flat and well developed :)

As of January 2025, this second tunnel on the tour is closed. There is no alternative route to Caldeira Verde and Inferno. The tour is very beautiful anyway, but if you set out with the goal in mind, it is of course a bit disappointing if you don't reach it. The closure is also marked on the map at the parking lot, but unfortunately in such a way that it can easily be overlooked.

Really impressive the Green Kettle! Depending on the weather, the tunnels can be very wet and the trails slippery, flashlight recommended.

Beautiful levada hike, which is initially quite wide and becomes increasingly narrower (up to 30 cm) as it progresses. A spectacular waterfall awaits you at the end point. A flashlight is required for the tunnels.

Today's levada hike offered amazing views and was challenging. It required a lot of concentration and balance the entire time.

Since every guidebook described the hike as very interesting, we hiked in a group, like a traditional hike. 🤣 Making it even more difficult was that the path was only 30 cm wide for most parts. Exciting.

Hiking in the clouds 😅 The goal was the waterfall, which you could hardly see at the end due to the clouds. Very mystical, like in a fantasy film. pure jungle.
Very nice tour, although at 6 kilometers I could use a little variety to walk next to the levadas.😅
The 3 tunnels were a welcome break.

The highs aren't right here either. Actually, they weren't worth mentioning.
However, the paths were very uneven, many stones and tree roots made the path a bit difficult. On the other hand, the path itself was very beautiful (everything is so wonderfully fresh and green) and definitely even more beautiful when the visibility was better.
The waterfall made up for …

To end my Madeira holiday, I visited what are probably the busiest trails on the island, starting with a levada walk. When I saw the large and full parking lot, I wanted to continue straight away. But since it was a long way to get there, I stayed. The tour was still nice and it was sometimes almost amusing when …

Beautiful hike along the Caldeira Levada.
There are 4 tunnels to cross.
Flashlight or headlamp strongly recommended. Sometimes you have to bend over in the tunnel.

Paths are sometimes not suitable for those who are not afraid of heights.

This was our last hike during our vacation in Madeira.

A hiking paradise...

Today I'm going with you to the Caldeirão Verde, the green basin of Madeira. The starting point is the car park in Queimadas (sufficient parking spaces, approx. €2.50 per day). Immediately after getting out of the car, the scent of nature greets me and blows my mind. From there it goes along the levada. In the last section there are …

No, the GPS did not fail. The tour is actually almost flat in terms of elevation profile. And that, although it goes through the impressive mountains of Madeira. Always nice along the Levada stream. At the far end a beautiful waterfall. If you like, you can also walk two kilometers further (and of course back) to the Caldeirão do Inferno. …

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the PR 9 - Levada do Caldeirão Verde Trail suitable for beginners?

While the path largely follows a flat levada, making it accessible, the round-trip distance of approximately 16.4 kilometers and the duration of around 6 hours mean it's a longer hike. It's generally rated as moderate in difficulty. Beginners with a good fitness level should be able to complete it, but be prepared for the length and the dark, potentially slippery tunnels.

Is this trail a loop or an out-and-back route?

The PR 9 - Levada do Caldeirão Verde Trail is an out-and-back route. This means you will retrace your steps along the same path to return to the starting point at Queimadas Forest Park.

What is the terrain like on the Levada do Caldeirão Verde trail?

The trail primarily follows an 18th-century irrigation channel, known as a 'levada,' resulting in a mostly flat dirt path. You'll walk through dense Laurissilva forest, encountering narrow sections, some along cliff sides (typically with railings). A notable feature is the presence of four dark, wet, and potentially slippery tunnels carved into the rock, requiring a light source. Expect some rocks and roots on the ground.

What should I know about the tunnels on this route?

The trail features four tunnels that vary in length and height. They are dark, can be wet, and the ground inside can be slippery. It is essential to bring a flashlight or headlamp for each person to navigate these sections safely. Watch your step and be mindful of low ceilings in some areas.

What are the main points of interest along the trail?

Beyond the lush Laurissilva forest and views over São Jorge, key highlights include a Traditional Santana house at Pico das Pedras near the start, several beautiful waterfalls along the way, and the spectacular 100-meter Caldeirão Verde Waterfall at the end of the trail, plunging into a cold lagoon. You'll also pass through unique Tunnels on the Levada do Caldeirão Verde.

Where can I park for the Levada do Caldeirão Verde trail?

The trail starts from Queimadas Forest Park. There is a dedicated parking area available at the park. It's a popular spot, so arriving early is advisable, especially during peak season, to secure a parking space.

Do I need a permit or pay an entrance fee for the Queimadas Forest Park or the trail itself?

Generally, there is no entrance fee or permit required to hike the PR 9 - Levada do Caldeirão Verde Trail or to enter Queimadas Forest Park. However, there might be a small fee for parking your car at the park's designated lot.

Is the Levada do Caldeirão Verde trail dog-friendly?

While dogs are generally allowed on many levada trails in Madeira, it's important to keep them on a leash. Given the narrow sections, cliff-side paths, and dark tunnels on this specific route, ensure your dog is comfortable with such conditions and that you can maintain control. Always carry waste bags and clean up after your pet.

What is the best time of year to hike the PR 9 - Levada do Caldeirão Verde Trail?

Madeira's climate is mild year-round, making the trail accessible in most seasons. However, the spring and autumn months (April-May and September-October) often offer the most pleasant temperatures and less chance of heavy rain. Summer can be warm, and winter might bring more rain, which can make the tunnels and paths wetter. Always check the local weather forecast before you go.

What essential gear should I bring for this hike?

For this hike, you should bring a flashlight or headlamp for the tunnels, sturdy hiking shoes with good grip (as paths can be wet and slippery), rain gear (Madeira weather can change quickly), sufficient water and snacks, and a fully charged phone. A small backpack for your essentials is also recommended.

Does the trail intersect other well-known paths?

Yes, while primarily following the PR 9 - Levada do Caldeirão Verde, the route also passes through sections of the PR JOEL - Um caminho para todos and the Vereda Achada do Teixeira - Queimadas.
