This moderate 7.8-mile (12.6 km) hike offers a diverse experience through the Yorkshire Dales, featuring pastoral river valleys, rolling green hills, and limestone landscapes. You will gain 669 feet (204 metres) in elevation over approximately 3 hours and 27 minutes, encountering tranquil riverside stretches and expansive meadows. A highlight is Scaleber Force, a captivating 40-foot (12-meter) waterfall nestled within a scenic wooded gorge, where clear waters cascade over limestone cliffs.

To enjoy this route, ensure you have good fitness, as some sections, particularly around Scaleber Force, can be challenging. The path to the waterfall is narrow, steep, and rocky; it can become very slippery after rain, so sturdy footwear and steady footing are essential. Hunter Bark Trig Point

Highlight • Summit

Situated roughly halfway between Long Preston and Settle, the unusually named Hunter Bark (315m) is a hill scarred by some quarry workings. Grassy hills and some rather pretty heather from here. The hill itself, with its trig point, is just to the west of the main path, which is the Pennine Bridleway. In particular to the north, there is a wonderful view of the tall hills where all the caves are near Settle.

Bookil Gill Beck

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

A quiet and very peaceful stretch here along Bookil Gill Beck between Langber Lane (east) and Long Preston Beck (west). Lots of grassy hills, wonderful far-reaching views, and of course the lovely becks, although do remember that after rain they can be rather raging!

It's amazing how quickly it becomes quiet just a short distance out of Long Preston!
