This circular route is approximately 8.9 kilometers long and typically takes around 2 hours and 43 minutes to complete. However, your actual duration may vary depending on your pace and how long you spend exploring the various points of interest.
The Path of the Cueva del Parpalló by the Mirador de la Caldereta is rated as moderate. It requires a good level of fitness, but the paths are largely accessible. There's an elevation gain and loss of about 290 meters. While mostly straightforward, some sections, especially if you venture towards Cova Oberta or Penya Negra, can be more challenging.
The trail is a circular route starting and ending in La Drova. You can find parking options within La Drova, which serves as the primary access point for this hike.
While the trail itself is generally accessible, specific regulations regarding dogs within the Parpalló-Borrell Municipal Natural Area may apply. It's always best to check local signage or the park's official guidelines for the most current information on leash requirements and restricted areas to ensure a pleasant experience for everyone.
The trail is enjoyable for hiking during most seasons. Spring and autumn generally offer the most pleasant temperatures and vibrant scenery. Summer can be hot, so an early start is recommended, while winter can be cooler but still suitable for hiking on clear days.
Generally, there is no permit or entrance fee required to hike the trails within the Parpalló-Borrell Municipal Natural Area. However, if you plan to take a guided tour of the Cueva del Parpalló itself, there may be a fee and advance booking required. We recommend checking the Visit Gandia website for the latest information on cave tours.
This trail offers several notable points of interest. You'll experience the Ascent Towards Tossal de la Caldereta, pass by the Font del Garrof, and enjoy panoramic views from the Coll de la Radella Viewpoint and the Caldereta Viewpoint. You can also see the historic Lime Kiln of la Drova. The highlight of the area is the Cueva del Parpalló, a significant prehistoric site.
The trail passes near the Cueva del Parpalló, which is one of Europe's most important Upper Paleolithic prehistoric sites. Guided visits to the cave are often available, typically starting from an information center nearby. It's advisable to check the Visit Gandia website for tour schedules and booking information, as direct access might be restricted.
The path primarily consists of accessible trails, winding through the limestone rock formations of the Mondúver Massif. While generally well-maintained, some sections require sure-footedness. The route offers a diverse natural environment within the Parpalló-Borrell municipal natural park.
Yes, this route incorporates significant portions of other official trails. Approximately 84% of the path follows the Senda de la Cova del Parpalló (SL-CV 79), and it also briefly intersects with sections of the [CIMA VA01] Montdúver * Gandía and De Barx a la Drova trails.
Given its 'moderate' difficulty rating and accessible paths, the main circular route can be suitable for families with older children who are accustomed to hiking. However, the full duration and elevation gain should be considered. Younger children or those less experienced might find it challenging. Always assess your family's fitness level before embarking on the full trail.
This is a stunning hike with a lot of the route on good tracks. The major uphill section is up a very steep mountain path all the way to the font. I would recommend this to mountain hikers at an Intermediate level. It's over 10k with nearly a 400 metre ascent. I enjoyed the hike and did a lot of filming and was at it for 5 hours.
