Celtic Cross on Gibbet Hill

Highlight • Monument

The Celtic Cross on Gibbet Hill is closely related to the reason Gibbet Hill is so called.

Three thieves were executed and their bodies hung on the hill as a warning to others. They murdered an unknown sailor they had befriended in the Red Lion in nearby Thursley. His memorial stone is closeby. Locals began to fear the area so in 1851, Sir William Erle erected this cross to show that it was safe.

Gibbet Hill Viewpoint

Highlight • Historical Site

The area around the Devil's Punchbowl was a hive of highwayman activity until the 19th century. Highwaymen were mounted thieves who robbed travellers. As this spot is on the route between London and Portsmouth, they were both frequent and no doubt often wealthy.

The three men who killed the unknown sailor (his memorial stone is nearby) were executed and their bodies hung on gibbets here on this hill as a warning to others, hence its name.

Temple of the Four Winds Viewpoint

Highlight • Historical Site

The Temple of the Four Winds was built in 1910 by Viscount Pirrie, an Irish shipbuilder and businessman. Over the years, the lodge fell into disrepair and was demolished in 1966. However, in recent years volunteers have unearthed the stone base and cut the shrubs back to reveal enchanting views. The site is managed by the National Trust.
