Frequently Asked Questions

How do I access the trailhead for the See Forever and Bear Creek Loop?

You can access this challenging loop from the town of Telluride. A popular starting point is to take the free Telluride Gondola up to the St. Sophia station. From there, you'll connect to the Coonskin Loop to reach the bike-accessible portion of the See Forever trail. Parking is available in Telluride, often near the gondola base.

Is the See Forever and Bear Creek Loop suitable for beginner mountain bikers?

No, this loop is rated as "Very Difficult" and is not suitable for beginners. It features very steep grades, significant elevation gain, and highly technical descents with tight switchbacks, rock drops, and sections with serious exposure. Advanced riding skills are essential, and there are "no fall sections" that demand extreme caution.

What is the terrain like on this mountain bike route?

The terrain is varied and demanding. The ascent on the See Forever trail primarily follows steep gravel ski roads. Be prepared for a notable 200-foot section with wooden staircases that requires a "hike-a-bike." The descent into Bear Creek via the Wasatch Connection and Bear Creek Trail is very technical, featuring narrow and steep switchbacks, rock drops, and rocky singletrack. You'll encounter loose rocks and deep gravel in places, requiring careful handling.

What is the best time of year to mountain bike this loop?

The best time to mountain bike the See Forever and Bear Creek Loop is typically from late spring to early fall, generally June through September, once the snow has melted and the trails are dry. Always check current trail conditions before heading out, as weather in the high alpine can change rapidly.

Do I need a permit or pay an entrance fee for this trail?

No, you do not need a specific permit or to pay an entrance fee to mountain bike the See Forever and Bear Creek Loop, as it is located within the Uncompahgre National Forest. However, always respect Leave No Trace principles and any local regulations.

Is the See Forever and Bear Creek Loop dog-friendly?

While dogs are generally allowed on trails in the Uncompahgre National Forest, the Bear Creek Trail section of this loop is extremely popular with hikers, including families with children and dogs. Due to the technical nature of the descent and the high volume of foot traffic, bringing a dog on a mountain bike can be challenging and potentially unsafe for both your dog and other trail users. If you do bring a dog, it must be kept on a leash at all times.

What kind of views can I expect on this route?

This loop is renowned for its breathtaking panoramic views. You can expect 360-degree vistas of the surrounding mountain ranges and peaks, including the Telluride Valley, Bear Creek Canyon, Revelation Bowl, and the distant Lizard Head Wilderness. The route takes you through a beautiful upper basin and dramatic canyon landscapes.

Does this mountain bike route connect with other trails?

Yes, this loop combines several trails. You'll ride sections of the Wasatch Descent, Wasatch Trail, Bear Creek, Wasatch Connection, and Camel's Garden Trail to complete the loop.

What should I bring for mountain biking this challenging loop?

Given the difficulty and technical nature, you should bring a well-maintained full-suspension mountain bike, appropriate safety gear including a helmet, gloves, and knee pads, plenty of water and snacks, a repair kit, and layers of clothing for changing weather conditions. Due to the high-consequence sections, consider bringing a first-aid kit and riding with a partner.

Are there any unique features or landmarks along the way?

Yes, beyond the incredible views, you'll pass landmarks like Chair 9, the Ski Patrol Hut, the Tempter House, and Alpino Vino on the See Forever section. On the Bear Creek Trail, you might also encounter a unique rock stacking garden. Remember to be vigilant for hikers on the popular Bear Creek Trail.
