Wai'anapanapa State Park

Highlight • Beach

On our tour around the Maui we stayed at this camp and explored the park.
It is very nice place and doesn't require a lot of time, 1 h max.
Bathrooms are decent and has outdoor showers.
The Most interesting things to explore are: Black sand beach, Blow hole, lava tube and hike over the lava fields.
It is great starting point for your Road to Hana ride in counterclockwise direction. Avoid all the traffic coming from the resorts.
Enjoy and respect!

Kūloa Point

Highlight • Viewpoint

Kūloa Point overlooks the Alenuihāhā Channel, which separates Maui from Hawaiʻi Island. On a clear day, you can see the island from the visitor deck, some thirty miles away. A trail runs along the point where you can take a self-guided tour of Kīpahulu to learn more about generations of the people's scared bond with their homeland and its importance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the terrain like for road cycling this route?

The route is characterized by continuous 'rollers'—short ups and downs—rather than sustained climbs, making for an undulating experience. The Hāna Highway is famous for its numerous twists and turns, with many historic one-lane bridges. The road surface is generally well-paved, though some segments on less-traveled sections might have potholes or loose gravel, requiring good bike handling skills.

Is this route suitable for beginner road cyclists?

This specific route is considered a 'moderate road ride' requiring 'good fitness'. While it's not a sustained climb, the continuous rollers and winding nature of the Hāna Highway can be challenging. Beginners with some experience and good fitness might manage, but it's not recommended for absolute novices.

What are the main points of interest along the Kūola Point & Hāmoa Beach cycling route?

The route offers breathtaking scenery, including lush tropical rainforests, bamboo groves, and cascading waterfalls. You'll also encounter dramatic coastal vistas, red lava rock, and black stony beaches. Notable highlights include Wai'anapanapa State Park, Kūloa Point, and the picturesque Hāmoa Beach.

What is the best time to cycle the Hāna Highway route to Kūola Point and Hāmoa Beach?

Starting your ride early in the day is highly recommended to avoid heavy traffic, which can be significant on the Hāna Highway, especially during late mornings. The rainforest environment means rain is a regular occurrence, so be prepared for potential showers regardless of the season.

Are there any permits or entrance fees required for cycling this route?

While the route description includes 'Haleakalā National Park', the Kīpahulu District (where this route is located) typically requires an entrance fee. It's advisable to check the official Haleakalā National Park website for the most current information on fees and any specific cycling regulations or permits that might apply.

Where can I park to cycle the Kūola Point & Hāmoa Beach route?

Specific parking information for the start of this exact route isn't detailed, but generally, parking along the Hāna Highway can be limited. It's best to research designated parking areas near the beginning of your chosen cycling segment or in nearby towns like Hāna. Arriving early can help secure a spot.

Is the Kūola Point & Hāmoa Beach via Hāna Highway route dog-friendly?

Generally, dogs are not permitted on trails within Haleakalā National Park, which includes parts of this route. Even outside the park, local regulations and the nature of the Hāna Highway (traffic, winding roads) make it less ideal for cycling with dogs. It's best to leave your furry friends at home for this particular ride.

What should I be aware of regarding weather and cell service on this route?

The route passes through a rainforest environment, so be prepared for potential rain at any time. Cell service can be spotty or non-existent in many areas along the Hāna Highway, so it's crucial to be self-sufficient, carry necessary supplies, and inform someone of your plans before you go.

Are there amenities like cafes or water stops along the Hāna Highway route?

While the Hāna Highway is known for local stands selling fresh banana bread and other treats, especially closer to Hāna town, dedicated cafes or water refill stations can be sparse. It's recommended to carry sufficient water and snacks for your entire ride, as cell service is unreliable for emergencies.

Does this cycling route intersect with other trails?

Yes, while primarily a road cycling route, it does briefly intersect or run alongside sections of other paths. These include small portions of the Pīpīwai Trail, Kūloa Point Trail, Kapohue Road, Waiohonu Road, and the Piilani Trail.

Is the Kūola Point & Hāmoa Beach route a loop or out-and-back?

This specific route, as described, is an out-and-back journey covering 43.7 kilometers (27.1 miles) from its starting point to Kūola Point and Hāmoa Beach and then returning.
