Running
Prepare for a difficult jogging experience on the Monte Antola and Casa del Romano trail from Piancassina. This challenging route covers 11.4 miles (18.3 km) with a significant elevation gain of 2779 feet (847 metres), typically taking around 2 hours and 58 minutes to complete. You will navigate varied terrain, from good mule tracks through woods and meadows to steep sections closer to the summit. The path, which can be muddy in damp weather, also passes through ancient villages and forest paths, leading you to the panoramic ridge between the Borbera and Trebbia valleys. On clear days, the grassy, pyramidal summit of Monte Antola offers expansive 360-degree views, stretching from the Ligurian coast to the snow-capped peaks of the north-western Alps, including Monviso and Monte Bianco.
This hard run demands very good fitness, sure-footedness, and sturdy shoes. While some segments, like the popular route from Casa del Romano to Monte Antola, are considered easier, the full Piancassina route is more demanding. The trail is generally well-marked, guiding you through deciduous forests, particularly around the Passo delle Tre Croci, where three wooden crosses stand as a notable landmark. Wide grassy expanses are common, especially known for narcissus blooms in late spring. Near the summit, the Rifugio Parco Antola provides a convenient reference point for refreshments or accommodation.
Monte Antola, often called the “mountain of the Genoese,” is cherished for its diverse landscapes and ecological significance within the Parco Regionale Naturale dell'Antola. The area holds historical importance, with Casa del Romano serving as a crossroads between valleys and the path utilizing sections of the ancient Via del Sale. Beyond the natural beauty, you will find an astronomical observatory near Casa del Romano, one of Italy's largest, adding a unique point of interest to your journey. The entire region is characterized by untouched nature and beautiful panoramic views at altitudes over 1000 meters.
