Bagni di Masino Forest

Highlight • Forest

The Bagni di Masino Forest, characterized by beeches and white and red firs, stands out from the others and captivates those who enter it thanks to its incredible undergrowth. The moss that covers the numerous cyclopean granite boulders that slipped after the retreat of the glaciers during the Quaternary era almost looks like a thick carpet, lining this unusual natural floor.

Qualido Lake

Highlight • Lake

The Qualido lake is a small body of water located in the Val di Mello, a nature reserve in the Val Masino. It was formed in 2009 due to a landslide that blocked the Mello stream, and is surrounded by mountains and woods that are reflected on its surface creating a suggestive atmosphere.

Val di Mello Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural Monument

In the summer, during the weekend it is traveled by many people on foot which make it difficult to climb from the entrance to the valley and to descend. The route alternates stretches of wide flat path with small climbs on large pebbles that are well fixed but not on a regular basis. Engaging and fun.

Trail Reviews

Jupp🇨🇭Toggenburg
July 13, 2025, 🇮🇹Im Val di Mello. Nach fast 30 Jahren wieder, mit Birgit. Suche nach dem Winnetou-Beutel😂👌

After the heavy thunderstorm and heavy rain last night and this morning, we took a short walk to our next stop: For the first time in almost 30 years, back in the beautiful Val di Mello, a side valley of the Valtellina. Not only good memories. I was here back then, two days after a cycling accident in Constance and a tetanus shot that I apparently didn't tolerate. In the middle of the night in Val Mello: I'm delirious, almost delirious, and I'm furious because, in the middle of the night, I can't find my "Winnetou pouch" anywhere...?! To this day, I still don't know what a Winnetou pouch is, or what's supposed to be in it. I've never used the word before, but I seem to have used it dozens of times during the night... ...and I think Birgit was about to call the boys with the big stroller and the tight jacket to pick me up... The next morning, I seemed to be mostly okay and responsive again, and we were able to go for a nice hike... So today, a return to this wonderful valley, a short bike ride, and a delicious meal: brasato and pizzoccheri... P.S.: I haven't found the Winnetou pouch or any of its possible contents today either... ...but I don't even know what it looks like or what could be in it...😂😂
