In 1903, the British-American millionaire William Waldorf Astor acquired the estate along with 51 hectares of land, which he extensively restored and rebuilt in a pseudo-medieval style. A small village located outside the moat was also rebuilt and expanded in the pseudo-Tudor style.
The large lake, incidentally, was dug by hand by 800 workers.
