Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best time of year to jog the Peter Skene Ogden Trail?

The trail is generally best enjoyed from late spring through early fall. During these months, the weather is more favorable, and the trail conditions are typically clear of snow and ice. Some sections may offer shade until late morning, providing respite from the sun.

Where can I park to access this trail?

There are multiple trailheads providing access to the route. The Ogden Group Camp is a common starting point for the full out-and-back experience. For shorter runs, you can consider starting from McKay Crossing Campground.

Is the Peter Skene Ogden Trail dog-friendly?

The trail is generally dog-friendly, but it's always best to check current regulations for the Newberry National Volcanic Monument regarding leash requirements and any specific restrictions that may apply.

Do I need a permit or pay an entrance fee for this trail?

The Peter Skene Ogden Trail is located within the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. While the trail itself may not require a specific permit, there might be entrance fees or passes required for accessing certain areas or parking within the Monument. It's advisable to check the official U.S. Forest Service website for the Newberry National Volcanic Monument for the most current information on fees and passes.

What is the terrain like on the trail?

The trail primarily consists of 100% single-track dirt and rock, offering a soft yet solid surface that is largely runnable. You'll encounter occasional roots and sticks, and some sections involve gentle climbing with a few switchbacks. Volcanic rock, pumice, and basalt are visible, especially along the cliffs of Paulina Creek. The trail often follows close to Paulina Creek, sometimes requiring crossings over bridges.

What kind of scenery can I expect along the route?

You'll be treated to a 'PNW waterfall paradise' as the trail closely follows Paulina Creek, providing the soothing sound of rushing water and numerous waterfalls. Notable highlights include the turnoff for Paulina Falls and views of Paulina Lake with Paulina Peak in the distance. The trail also passes through big evergreens, older growth forests, and areas with unique volcanic rock formations. Don't miss McKay Crossing Falls.

How long does it typically take to jog this route?

The full route, as mapped, is approximately 26.5 km (16.5 miles) and typically takes around 3 hours and 16 minutes to jog. This duration can vary based on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the scenery.

Is this trail suitable for beginner joggers?

The Peter Skene Ogden Trail is generally considered a difficult route for jogging due to its length and sustained elevation gain. While sections are runnable with soft ground, the full out-and-back experience involves significant vertical gain. Shorter sections, such as starting from McKay Crossing Campground, can offer a less strenuous option for those looking for a moderate experience.

Does this route connect with other trails?

Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Peter Skene Ogden Trail #3956, and near its end, it connects to the Crater Rim Trail #3957 and the Paulina Lakeshore Trail #3955, offering opportunities for extended adventures around Paulina Lake.

Are there any natural water sources available on the trail?

The trail closely follows Paulina Creek, which is a prominent feature. While the creek provides abundant water, it is not treated and should not be consumed directly without proper filtration or purification. It's recommended to carry sufficient water for your entire journey.

What is the best starting point for a shorter jogging experience?

If you're looking for a shorter, less strenuous run, starting from McKay Crossing Campground is a good option. This allows you to experience parts of the beautiful trail without committing to the full, longer distance from the Ogden Group Camp.
