Hiking

On the edge of the Northern Broads, the charming village of Coltishall is the start point for this picturesque loop. The first half discovers the Bure Valley Path, taking you alongside the heritage railway of the same name. The second half sees you briefly visiting the unspoiled village of Belaugh and following the serene River Bure back to Coltishall.

After a short and pleasant amble to leave leafy Coltishall, the route picks up the Bure Valley Path. This 9-mile (14.5 km) walkers’ and cyclists’ path follows the entire length of the Bure Valley Railway, a narrow gauge heritage line between Aylsham and Wroxham. If you’re lucky, you might see a steam locomotive chuntering along the tracks.

The route follows the railway for 1.2 miles (2 km), before joining field tracks through farmland to the little riverside village of Belaugh, notable for its fine St Peter’s Church and pretty little boatyard. The final part of the loop shadows the River Bure upstream, all the way back to Coltishall. One of the Broad’s three principal rivers, the Bure offers plenty of wildlife spotting opportunities.

For post-hike refreshments and a refuel, check out The Rising Sun, an excellent waterside pub that serves delicious food, including wood-fired pizzas. The neighbouring King’s Head or the Piece of Cake cafe in the centre of the village are also good options.

River Bure at Coltishall

Highlight • Viewpoint

One of the Norfolk Broads' three principal rivers, an amble along the Bure is usually a delight. Coltishall marks the head of the navigable section these days, so you can expect to see boats enjoying the water. Two major tributaries, the Ant and the Thurne join the Bure, before it empties into the sea at Gorleston.
