Starting from the excellent Dartmoor National Park Visitor Centre in Postbridge, this loop heads into Bellever Forest around Lakehead Hill, taking in both wide gravel fire roads and a narrower bridleway track.
There’s parking, toilets and a great shop and exhibition centre at the start, as well as a water tower where you can fill up your bottle before you head out. Carefully cross the road before entering the forest.
You start on wide, gently-climbing gravel roads through the plantation heading south. The second leg takes you west, following the narrower heathland bridleway past the hut circle. You later rejoin wider gravel roads to head back parallel to the main road, rejoining the start of the route back to the visitor centre.
If you’re peckish, head to Postbridge Stores where they sell drinks, pasties and sweet treats as well as some lovely souvenirs.
As it’s predominantly quite sheltered in the woodland, it can be suitable for more unpredictable weather days, but it’s always a good idea to have extra layers and waterproofs on Dartmoor.
