The Tour of Lake Garlate is generally rated as a moderate hike. While many lakeside sections are relatively flat and easy, the full 14.6 km route requires good fitness. Some paths venturing into the surrounding hills can be more challenging, demanding sure-footedness.
The route features a diverse mix of terrain. You'll encounter comfortable, partially shaded lakeside promenades, paved sections, and dirt roads. While many paths directly circling the lake are flat, venturing slightly off the main loop can introduce more varied terrain.
Along the route, you can enjoy tranquil scenery with views of Lake Garlate and the surrounding mountains. Specific highlights include the Vercurago Lakeside Promenade, the historic Isola Viscontea, and the impressive Azzone Visconti Bridge. The area is also rich in history, with traditional villages and sites mentioned in Alessandro Manzoni's 'The Betrothed'.
Yes, the route intersects with several other paths. Notably, it covers a significant portion of 'L'Adda e il naviglio di Paderno' and also touches sections of 'Sentiero Pedemonte - Tappa 4', 'Sentierone', and 'CamminaForeste - Tappa 9C'.
The best time to hike this route is typically in spring and autumn. During these seasons, the weather is pleasant, and you can enjoy opportunities for birdwatching, with sightings of swans and various bird species. The trail is generally less crowded than other Italian lakes, offering a peaceful experience.
Yes, the Tour of Lake Garlate is generally dog-friendly. Many outdoor trails around the lake welcome dogs. However, it's always recommended to keep your dog on a leash, especially in more populated areas or near wildlife, and to clean up after them.
While specific parking lots are not detailed, you can typically find parking in the towns surrounding Lake Garlate, such as Garlate or Vercurago. Look for public parking areas near the lakeside promenades or trail access points.
No, you do not need a permit or to pay an entrance fee to hike the Tour of Lake Garlate. The trail is freely accessible to the public.
The Tour of Lake Garlate is located within Parco Adda Nord. Generally, there are no specific entrance fees or permits required for hiking on established trails within the park. Yes, as the route passes through several towns and villages around the lake, you will find various amenities. These can include cafes, restaurants, and shops, particularly in places like Garlate and Vercurago, offering opportunities for refreshments and breaks.
For this moderate hike, we recommend packing sturdy walking shoes, water, snacks, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and appropriate clothing for the weather. Given the varied terrain, comfortable footwear is key. Don't forget your camera for the scenic views!
Nice little tour to do if you only have half a day or for those who can't/don't want to walk uphill. You can possibly extend it by an hour with the climb to the castle of the Unnamed from Vercurago, which in my opinion is worth it, but which my husband denied me, having already seen it in the past🫠😉
