Shankend Viaduct

Highlight • Bridge

This large 15-arch viaduct used to be a part of a railway line between Carlisle and Edinburgh. The line was opened in 1862 and closed in 1969. Today, it's a powerful slight to behold.

Trail Reviews

Stuart Prouse
May 3, 2024, Hawick. Shankend Viaduct. Mint trail

This trail made a mint impression upon me. A joy to ride, beautiful scenery, friendly animals that come to you, good surfaces and history attached to the route. Sadly there is a small segment at the southerly point where about 6 trees are covering the track. I hope someone takes a small saw and unblocks or makes easier this section to ride through. The weather turned bad with thunder & lightening & rain. I was at an elevated location where no trees were to the sides of the track, an exposed area. I had to peddle quickly to reach a safer location, but the destination was close by. Shankend Viaduct is part of the old Edinburgh Waverley to Carlisle route, mint to ride on the old railtrack
