The Rifugio Elisa Loop is a challenging hike. Based on its length and elevation gain, it typically takes around 6.5 hours to complete.
The terrain is highly varied and demanding. You'll encounter everything from a mule track and military road at the start to much steeper sections along the Meria creek, including 'staircases' and rugged mountain paths. Beyond Rifugio Elisa, the environment becomes wilder, with slippery scree and vertical rocks equipped with chains, particularly on sections towards Buco di Grigna.
No, the Rifugio Elisa Loop is rated as a 'difficult' to 'extremely difficult' hike. It requires very good physical fitness, sure-footedness, sturdy shoes, and for some sections, alpine experience. It is not recommended for beginners or families with young children due to its challenging nature and significant elevation gain.
A common starting point for this loop is from Mandello del Lario – Rongio. Specific parking information is best checked locally, but this village serves as a primary access point for many trails in the area.
The trail offers stunning scenery and several points of interest. You'll pass through the lush Val Meria, see the beautiful Val Mala Gorge and Waterfall, and potentially visit the Grotta Ferrera, famously mentioned by Leonardo da Vinci. Higher up, enjoy panoramic views from peaks like Zucco di Larenson and Monte Campione, overlooking Lake Lecco. The Elisa Hut also serves as a key landmark and resting point.
The best time to hike the Rifugio Elisa Loop is typically from late spring through early autumn (May to October), when the weather is more stable and there is less snow at higher elevations. Always check local weather forecasts and trail conditions before heading out, especially for snow or ice in shoulder seasons.
While dogs are generally allowed in the Parco delle Grigne, the challenging and technical nature of this specific trail, including steep ascents, scree, and sections with chains, might make it difficult or unsafe for some dogs. If you bring your dog, ensure they are fit for such terrain and always keep them on a leash.
As the Rifugio Elisa Loop is located within the Parco delle Grigne, there are generally no specific entrance fees or permits required for hiking the trails themselves. However, always respect park regulations, especially regarding waste, wildlife, and fire safety.
Yes, the route intersects with and utilizes sections of several other trails. You'll find yourself on parts of the La Gardata - Rifugio Elisa, Sentee del Tacc, and Grigne Skymarathon trails, among others.
Yes, the Elisa Hut (Rifugio Elisa) is a key feature of the loop, offering a place to rest and potentially get refreshments. You might also pass by Baita dell'Aser, another hut in the area.
Given the trail's difficulty, you should bring sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support, appropriate layers of clothing for changing mountain weather, plenty of water and snacks, a map and compass or GPS device, a first-aid kit, and potentially hiking poles. For sections with chains, gloves can be helpful.
Walk with various panoramic views, with a circular route. The section immediately after the Gardata crosses a gully where the path is poorly marked and where the many leaves on the ground make walking less comfortable. For the rest, a very pleasant walk, where the only real danger is the difference in altitude. Arriving a stone's throw from the Elisa refuge, I stopped because at this time of year (January), I found the first ice on the path
It's so nice to go to the Elisa refuge 😊⛰️🥾🏞️ I reached it from Rongio, a village in Mandello del Lario, via trail no. 14. It's well-maintained and preserved. From Ponte di Ferro, it becomes quite steep with many hairpin bends, but it's easily passable without any problems. Then.... Guys.... What can I say when you get to the refuge? It's just that it's stunning. Breathtaking views of Lake Lario and the surrounding mountains. The refuge is open every day for now, and I was able to enjoy a piece of their delicious cakes and pies. Apple pie. Mouth-watering 😋😋😋🍰 It's a place I highly recommend ⛰️🥾😊👍👋👋👋
Beautiful tour starting from Rongio, mule track but quite challenging due to the difference in altitude. Stunning landscape
There was no GPS from Elisa refuge to go up. So the path was not stored well.
