This loop tour is categorized as moderate. It covers approximately 7.5 kilometers (4.65 miles) with an elevation gain and loss of about 320 meters (1,050 feet). While the paths are generally accessible, it requires a good level of fitness and sure-footedness.
The trail features a picturesque mix of terrain, characteristic of Tuscany. You'll traverse dirt roads, often called 'strade bianche', alongside vineyards, silvery olive orchards, and wooded areas with chestnut and oak trees. Expect rolling hills and views of the distinct volcanic shape of Monte Amiata.
This route offers an immersive experience into the heart of the Brunello wine region. Key highlights include the historic Montalcino Fortress and the Historic Centre of Montalcino. You'll also walk directly through vineyards, experiencing the Trail Through the Vineyards, which provides intimate views of the area's viticulture.
The loop tour starts and ends in Montalcino. Parking is generally available within the town of Montalcino, often in designated public parking areas, from which you can access the trailhead.
The best times to hike this trail are typically spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October). During these seasons, the weather is pleasant, and the landscape is particularly beautiful, with blooming wildflowers in spring or vibrant colors during the grape harvest in autumn. It's advisable to avoid the peak summer months due to high temperatures.
Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, it's important to keep your dog on a leash, especially when passing through vineyards, near farmhouses, or in areas where livestock might be present. Always carry water for your pet and clean up after them.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike this trail or generally within the Val d'Orcia region. The trails are publicly accessible, allowing you to enjoy the natural beauty and cultural landscape freely.
Yes, sections of this loop tour overlap with other official trails. You will find yourself on parts of the L'Eroica (34% of the route), Piazza Santa Caterina (14%), Via del Mistero (8%), and Via della Fonte Minuta (6%) trails.
For this moderate hike, wear comfortable hiking shoes with good grip, as you'll be on dirt roads and varied terrain. Dress in layers suitable for the season, and bring sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen). Always carry sufficient water, snacks, and a fully charged phone. A map or GPS device is also recommended.
As the loop tour starts and ends in Montalcino, you'll find numerous cafes, restaurants, and wine bars within the town itself. These establishments offer excellent opportunities for refreshments, a meal, or to sample the local Brunello wine before or after your hike.
While the trail passes directly through vineyards, direct winery visits typically require prior booking and are not usually integrated into the trail itself. Many wineries in the Montalcino area offer tours and tastings, which you can arrange separately to complement your hiking experience.
We started at the free parking lot up in town. The trail quickly descended steeply into the valley to the vineyards and wineries. Then, of course, it climbed steeply back to Montalcino. We looked for the entrance to the castle, but couldn't find it.
