Hiking

This somewhat more challenging circular hike following in the footsteps of Max Wallraf in Cologne guarantees a varied holiday experience at the foot of the Rubihorn. The best way to reach the starting point by public transport is from the Ice Sports Center bus stop.

At the beginning of this multifaceted hike, you walk past the Schattenberg Stadium up to the Breitenberg. Two descent options are then available. The Tobelweg trail down to the valley requires sturdy hiking boots and surefootedness, but offers a beautiful nature experience in the deep gorge of the wild Gaisalpbach stream. The well-maintained road, on the other hand, is a much more comfortable and less demanding option.

Once you reach the valley, the trail continues effortlessly along the Gaisalpbach stream for a short distance until the hiking trail leads you back to Oberstdorf on sunny meadow paths with great views via Rubi. Tip: If you take a short detour to the other side of Reichenbach, you can enjoy a refreshing break in the mud bath there.

Before your tour, it is best to check the Oberstdorf Tourism mountain sports report for information on the trail network and the current mountain weather: www.oberstdorf.de/alpininfo/bergsportbericht.

View of Oberstdorf and the Iller Valley from Wallrafweg

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

An absolute must, this way. Easy to walk if you are coming from Gaisalp. The view is fantastic.

Incidentally, the trail owes its name to the President of the Reichstag and Mayor of Cologne, Max Wallraf, who was a regular in Oberstdorf and suggested that the route be built.

July 13, 2024,Oberstdorf Wallrafweg Tobelweg Gaisalpbach Wasserfall
Great circular route from Oberstdorf, motorhome parking space, past the ski jumps, up to the Gaisalpe with a stop and over the waterfalls. Back at the waterfalls, sure-footedness is a must as you have to climb over rocks in places, but everything is doable if you go carefully 🙋‍♂️

Very beautiful alp, lovely cows and an exciting descent with many rocky steps in the ravine

Nice relaxed round on the Wallrafweg to Oberstdorf and in the valley back to Reichenbach.

It was approx. 411 meters in altitude with a pure running time of approx. 2:47 hours.

Taking advantage of the beautiful winter weather, today we went from Reichenbach through the Gaisalptobel and over the snowy and untracked Wallraffweg to Oberstdorf. The route then led back via Rubi to Reichenbach via the valley path. A great tour with great wintery impressions and fantastic views. 🏔️🥾❄️☀️👌🙂

My friend Markus had a new pair of hiking boots on his to-do list, so we quickly drove to the Allgäu region. After trying on the shoes and receiving excellent advice, we bought them, so there was nothing to stop us from breaking them in. We started in Oberstdorf at the bus station and headed towards the ice stadium/ski jump. …

From Reichenbach via Gaisalptobel (closed in winter, but almost completely free of snow and ice today) to the (closed) Gaisalpe and the lower Richteralpe with a beautiful view of the Illertal, the Entschenkopf and the Rubihorn. Then over the Wallraffweg with great views to Oberstdorf. Back via Rubi via Wiesenweg to Reichenbach.

Hike to the Gaisalpe and over the Wallrafweg to Oberstdorf

The start was at the Gaisalpe car park in Reichenbach (day ticket € 4). First along the Gaisalpbach over the asphalt road to a small vantage point above Reichenbach (notice board “Resting benches”). From there a very short distance back on the road and over the ravine steadily uphill along …

The three of us actually wanted to go to the Gaisalpe via the Wallrafweg today, then go down on the sledge and then back down. Unfortunately, that didn't happen 😥 The day got off to a very tough start 😬 Em had a stomach ache and couldn't come. They both felt sorry for me and I was allowed to do …
