Hiking
Explore the diverse landscapes of the North Norfolk coastline on this moderate 8.7-mile (14.0 km) loop, which typically takes around 3 hours and 33 minutes to complete. You will encounter expansive salt marshes, offering wide-open views and a haven for birdlife, alongside glimpses of the sea and sections through sandy beaches and pine woods. The trail also leads you through the historic Wells-next-the-Sea Harbour, with its impressive granary building, and the charming village of Stiffkey, known for its chalk stream.
While the route is predominantly flat with only 121 feet (37 metres) of elevation gain, good fitness is beneficial for the entire duration. Be prepared for varied surfaces, including grassy paths, sandy stone, and some tarmac. Sections along the salt marshes can be muddy, so choose your footwear accordingly. For added flexibility, you can use the Coast Hopper bus service to cover parts of the trail or shorten your hike.
This trail is notable for its integration with the Norfolk Coast Path and its unique historical features. Near Stiffkey, you will discover The Whirlygig, a circular tarmac runway that was once a top-secret military training site for launching remote-controlled aircraft. The extensive salt marshes provide excellent opportunities for birdwatching, where you might spot egrets, curlews, and oystercatchers, with notice boards often providing local wildlife information.
