Devizes Market Place and Landmarks

Highlight • Historical Site

The Market Cross was designed by Benjamin Wyatt and was given somewhat begrudgingly by Lord Sidmouth.  He was Member of Parliament for the Borough from 1784 to 1805 and Prime Minister from 1801 to 1804. Apparently (and not unusual for a politician) he seemed to have forgotten an earlier promise to erect a cross way back in 1797, but the townspeople managed to persuade him and in 1814 the Cross was built.

Quakers Walk

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

This is a wonderful path from Devizes to Roundway, at the base of Walkers Hill. A tree-lined walkway, it's been a public right of way for 200 years although the path itself likely dates back at least 700 years, running through the Roundhill estate. If you park in Devizes, it's a great path to use to ascend the downs and visit the Millennium white horse.

Devizes White Horse

Highlight • Monument

The Devizes Millennium White Horse is one of the most recent chalk figures cut in the UK, created in 1999. It sits up on an escarpment on Roundway Hill just north of Devizes and it's easily accessible by multiple footpaths and bridleways. You can view the horse from the south as well as from neighbouring Milk Hill. It's one of many past and present chalk horses on Wiltshire's hills.

View from Oliver’s Castle hill fort

Highlight • Historical Site

Oliver's Castle is an Iron Age hill fort with awe-inspiring views across the plain over Devizes and beyond. The fort gets its name from the Battle of Roundway, when Sir William Waller's 2,500-strong cavalry camped here for three nights. As is common throughout England, anything related to the Civil War usually ends up linked to Oliver Cromwell, though.

January 25, 2025,Devizes and Olivers Castle Loop via Devizes
This is a nice walk and suitable for most people, including old and overweight people like me. Once you get up to the White Horse most of the climbing is completed. The route is a mix of road, tracks and fields. As you can see from the photos the route can get very muddy after rain. I started the route …
This is easy walk with some pretty views over the surrounding countryside. It is very muddy in parts at the minute so go with grippy shoes. There are also some steep drops in the woods to be careful of.
Ignore the Roundway Down Iron Age Hill Fort at the start of the walk. For some reason the geo tag on the photos have placed these in the wrong place.
This is great walk that currently has some diversions on due to pathways being closed, while major electrical work is being undertaken. This walk, if followed takes you to one …
