This route was planned by komoot.
The Devizes White Horse Loop is generally classified as moderate. While it includes some shorter climbs and easily accessible paths, a good level of fitness is recommended. You'll encounter steady ascents, particularly up the Wessex Ridgeway, and potentially muddy sections, especially after rain.
The trail offers varied terrain. You'll start along the relatively flat Kennet & Avon Canal, then climb towards the downs and the Wessex Ridgeway. Expect farm tracks, potentially muddy paddocks and fields, wooded areas around places like Oliver's Castle, and sections on tarmac roads and public footpaths, including the historic Quakers Walk.
This route showcases diverse scenery and historical points of interest. You'll pass through Devizes Market Place and Landmarks, walk along the tranquil Kennet & Avon Canal, and experience the historic Quakers Walk. The centerpiece is the Devizes White Horse, cut into Roundway Hill. From elevated points like Oliver’s Castle, you'll enjoy stunning views of the surrounding Wiltshire countryside.
While the trail can be accessed from various points, starting in Devizes offers convenient parking options. Specific parking details are best checked locally upon arrival in Devizes, as options can vary.
Yes, the Devizes White Horse Loop is generally dog-friendly. However, as the route traverses farm tracks and fields, often with livestock, it's essential to keep dogs under close control, preferably on a leash, especially near animals. Please also ensure you clean up after your dog.
The trail can be enjoyed year-round, but spring and summer offer the most pleasant conditions with warmer weather and blooming landscapes. Autumn provides beautiful foliage. Be aware that parts of the trail, particularly fields and paddocks, can become very muddy and challenging after rain, making waterproof footwear essential, especially in wetter seasons.
No, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Devizes White Horse Loop. The trail is located within the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). While there are no fees, visitors are encouraged to follow the Countryside Code: respect local residents and livestock, protect the natural environment, and take all litter home. More information can be found on the Visit Wiltshire website.
The average duration for hiking this 11.4 km (7.1 miles) loop is approximately 3 hours. However, this can vary depending on your pace, the number of stops you make for photos or breaks, and trail conditions, especially if it's muddy.
Yes, the route incorporates sections of several official trails. You'll find yourself on parts of the Wessex Ridgeway, the Mid Wilts Way, the Wessex Ridgeway Trail, and the White Horse Trail. It also includes segments of the historic Quakers Walk and the Kennet and Avon Canal Trail.
Given the varied terrain and potential for mud, sturdy waterproof hiking boots are highly recommended. Layers of clothing are advisable to adapt to changing weather. Don't forget water, snacks, a map or GPS device (like komoot), and sun protection. If hiking in wetter seasons, gaiters might be useful.
Yes, the loop starts and ends in Devizes, a market town with a good selection of pubs, cafes, and shops where you can refuel before or after your hike. The trail also passes through quiet country villages, some of which may offer local amenities.
This is a nice walk and suitable for most people, including old and overweight people like me. Once you get up to the White Horse most of the climbing is completed. The route is a mix of road, tracks and fields. As you can see from the photos the route can get very muddy after rain. I started the route in Devizes market place. Lots of cafes to eat before setting off. Cozy Cafe is recommended. Finish the route with a bear in the Black Swan or one of the many pubs in the town
This is easy walk with some pretty views over the surrounding countryside. It is very muddy in parts at the minute so go with grippy shoes. There are also some steep drops in the woods to be careful of.
Ignore the Roundway Down Iron Age Hill Fort at the start of the walk. For some reason the geo tag on the photos have placed these in the wrong place. This is great walk that currently has some diversions on due to pathways being closed, while major electrical work is being undertaken. This walk, if followed takes you to one of the closed paths. I did this for information purposes, so no need to follow.
