Running

Lace up for the Camlough Lake running loop, a scenic and moderately challenging jog through Northern Ireland's Ring of Gullion Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This popular route circles the tranquil Camlough Lake, offering picturesque views across its waters as you go. The trail covers 6.5 miles (10.5 km) with an elevation gain of 418 feet (127 metres), making it a moderate run that typically takes about 1 hour and 7 minutes to complete. You'll find mostly paved surfaces, but the gentle undulations require good fitness, letting you enjoy the unique geological landscape of rolling hills and green fields.

Planning your visit is straightforward, with a convenient car parking area located at the northern end of Camlough Lake. This makes accessing the start of your jog simple and hassle-free. The mostly paved nature of the loop means it's generally accessible in various conditions, though checking local weather is always a good idea. As a popular local spot, you might find it more peaceful during off-peak hours if you prefer a quieter experience. There are no mentions of permits or fees, suggesting an open access trail for all to enjoy.

This loop is a highlight within the Ring of Gullion, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty renowned for its distinctive volcanic geology, with rocks formed over 400 million years ago. Camlough Lake itself, meaning "Crooked Lake," is the largest lake in the region and was once a large disused reservoir. Its diverse aquatic plant life, marsh, and scrub provide vital nesting sites for various birds, including Mute Swans, Great Crested Grebes, and Herons, adding to the natural charm of your run.

Killevy Churches Ruins

Highlight • Historical Site

At this point, St. Moninna founded an early Christian community in the late 5th century. No buildings from their time have survived as they were made of wood. What you can see here is a ruin that originally consisted of two churches; the western one is from the 10./11. Century and the eastern from the later Middle Ages.
