An integral part of the Teide National Park, the Cañadas caldera also provides its boundary. The caldera is a vast geological depression which results from the collapse of magma chambers emptied after eruptions. The plains at the foot of its walls once served as a transhumance route.
This loop takes you to its highest point, the Guajara summit at 2,718 meters above sea level. Dominating the caldera, it offers a fantastic viewpoint over the caldera dominated by Teide which sits in the background. The route begins at the Cañada Blanca reception center served by bus lines 342 and 348. This site describes the life of the region's populations through the centuries.
The route begins with a relatively flat portion which crosses the Cañada de la Camilleta and its geological curiosities. Things get serious when you embark on the climb to Guajara. Along the way, the Degollada de Guajara already offers a beautiful overview of Teide and the caldera. A small flat area follows before returning to a relatively steep slope.
When you finally reach the summit, the majestic view that awaits you rewards all the efforts you have made. On one side you overlook the Cañadas caldera and its imposing volcano, on the other the view stretches over the southern part of the island to the ocean. In the distance, you can even see the island of Gran Canaria.
Now all you have to do is go down to reach your starting point. Do not relax your vigilance because certain technical passages require your full attention. The slope gradually softens as you reach the Cañada Blanca visitor center.
