Family hike Wurbauerkogl – Kalkalpen National Park

The Wurbauerkogel adventure mountain can be reached via many different paths from the town center of Windischgarsten and is ideal for a leisurely excursion - even with children. The route leads through meadows and forests to the panorama tower, from whose airy viewing terrace you can see 21 two-thousand-meter peaks when the visibility is good: the Totes Gebirge, the Sengsen Mountains and the Hall Walls are within your reach.

An asphalt road initially leads directly from the market square in Windischgarsten to the access area of the chair lift. From there you take steps to a gravel footpath and further up to the water reservoir. After a few minutes you will reach the Simbergwiese, from which a forest road and then a path lead to the Wurbauerkogel mountain station.

It's best to climb the panorama tower straight up here - from there you can enjoy an impressive view. With a length of around 20 kilometers, the Sengsen Mountains form the “backbone” of the national park from the west. In the southeast, if the visibility is good, you can see the rugged peaks of the neighboring Gesäuse National Park and in the west you can see the white limestone ridges of the Totes Gebirge. In the Reichraminger Hintergebirge, in the eastern part of the national park, there is a completely different landscape: here, deep gorges and extensive forests form the heart of Austria's forest national park.

To descend, follow the asphalt road eastwards to the Wurbauer Jausenstation and then take the hiking trail back to the valley station. Alternatively, you can of course also float towards the valley with the nostalgic chairlift.
