The trail is primarily a well-worn dirt path, but you will encounter some rockier sections. There are also stairs and wooden bridges. Depending on recent weather, it can be dusty when dry or muddy in areas with small waterfalls and dripping water. Some parts can be narrow with lush vegetation.
You'll enjoy dramatic canyon walls and sweeping views of the Snake River. The trail passes directly under the towering I.B. Perrine Bridge, and you'll see numerous small waterfalls. On suitable days, you might even witness BASE jumpers leaping from the bridge. There are also opportunities for water access to the Snake River.

Given the varied terrain, including potentially dusty or muddy sections and rocky parts, it's recommended to wear tennis shoes or light hiking shoes for support and stability.
Yes, the route also passes through sections of the Canyon Rim Trail.
A truly unique aspect is the chance to witness BASE jumpers leaping from the I.B. Perrine Bridge, often landing in a field near the trail's end. This spectacle is a highlight for many visitors.
We walked down from the top of the canyon to the trail on the road. The trail itself was flat with one set of stairs that made the steep part easy. Even kids could do it. Under the bridge we watched a few base jumpers take the plunge. Really neat
