Mynydd Mawr

Highlight • Natural Monument

We missed the view at the top because of fog, wind and rain, but the place seems to be beautiful. And it was still fun to be there with so… British conditions :)
I'm surprised nobody has added this landmak yet. I'm sure others will have nicer photos to add.

Expect significant climbs, particularly the tough ascent to Rhiw from Hell's Mouth Beach, which has an average gradient of 7% and a steepest segment of 19.1%.

What kind of gearing is recommended for the climbs on this route?

Due to the significant climbs, especially the ascent to Rhiw, mountain gearing is highly recommended. Some segments are so steep that you might even need to push your bike.

What are the main points of interest along the route?

The route offers stunning coastal scenery and passes several notable highlights. You'll experience the beautiful Porthdinllaen Bay, the prominent Mynydd Mawr, and the picturesque Hell's Mouth Beach (Porth Neigwl) with its fantastic views. The starting point, Nefyn Beach, is also a charming spot.

Where can I park when cycling this route from Nefyn?

While specific parking details are not provided, Nefyn is a seaside village, and parking options are typically available near the beach or in designated village car parks. It's advisable to check local signage upon arrival for the most current information.

Is this cycling route dog-friendly?

While the Llŷn Peninsula generally welcomes dogs, specific rules can vary for cycling routes and beaches. It's always best to keep dogs on a lead, especially in rural areas with livestock, and to check local regulations for any restrictions on beaches or specific sections of the trail.

What is the best time of year to cycle the Llŷn Peninsula?

The Llŷn Peninsula offers beautiful scenery year-round, but for touring cycling, the spring and summer months (April to September) generally provide the most favorable weather conditions. This allows for better enjoyment of the coastal views and avoids the harsher winds and rain that can occur in autumn and winter.

Are there any permits or fees required to cycle in the Llŷn National Landscape?

Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required for cycling on public rights of way within the Llŷn National Landscape. However, always respect private land, follow the Countryside Code, and be aware that some specific attractions or car parks may have charges.

Yes, starting in Nefyn, you'll find amenities. The route also passes through or near charming villages like Aberdaron, which offer options for cafes and pubs.
