Hiking

Embark on a difficult 14.2-mile (22.9 km) hike along the South West Coast Path, offering dramatic coastal scenery between Trebarwith Strand and Port Isaac. This route is known for its strenuous terrain, featuring steep descents into valleys and tough climbs back up to cliff tops, navigating at least seven valleys. You will gain 1923 feet (586 metres) in elevation over approximately 8 hours and 2 minutes, making it a demanding day out. Expect rough, loose paths and magnificent sea views throughout, with panoramic perspectives from points like Dennis Point. You might spot wildlife such as skylarks and butterflies, and in summer, the hillsides are covered in soft grass and white clover. The path takes you past isolated spots like Backways Cove and the stunning Trebarwith Sands.

This challenging out-and-back trail requires a good level of fitness; it is not a casual stroll. Consider starting early to allow ample time to complete the full 8-hour and 2-minute journey, or plan for an overnight stay to break up the distance. Both Trebarwith Strand, your starting point, and Port Isaac, your destination, offer amenities like pubs, cafes, and restaurants where you can refuel. Be prepared for varied terrain, including sections that can be rough, loose, or overgrown.

This section is celebrated as one of Cornwall's finest parts of the South West Coast Path, falling within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. As you hike, you will see remnants of past industries, such as slate quarry buildings and old donkey tracks around Backway's Cove. The picturesque fishing village of Port Isaac, famous as "Portwenn" from the TV series Doc Martin, awaits you at the turnaround point. This trail offers a chance to experience the natural beauty and charm of Cornwall's north coast.

Backways Cove

Highlight • Beach

Pause a moment to appreciate the rugged beauty of Backways Cove. It can only be reached by walking and is a true hidden gem of Cornwall. You can hike down a set of steep steps if you'd like to get a closer view and you're unlikely to meet many other people on the beach.

Port Isaac Village and Harbour

Highlight • Settlement

Port Isaac is a picturesque fishing village that has thrived since the 14th century. Its narrow and winding streets — lined with old white-washed cottages and traditional granite and slate Cornish houses — are wonderful to explore. In fact, Port Isaac is famous for having one of the narrowest alleyways in Britain, Squeezy Belly Alley.

Almost more beautiful today than yesterday in the sunshine...
Still a fascinating floral frenzy...
Lots of direct and steep climbs...

I travelled by bus from Tintagel to Port Isaac. Two busses, 95 & 96, only one good connection - take the 08.00 departure of the 95 from Tintagel, then a one hour total journey. (2024 timetable)
What a damn tour. It's not just that it's steep (steep!!!) uphill and downhill a few times, because it had poured all day the day before, the paths were muddy and you partially sunk in the morass. In addition, at the end you walk for kilometers on a beaten path, directly at the abyss, which is so overgrown that you …
