Many hikers recommend tackling this loop clockwise. This means you'll ascend via the Wapack Trail, which is steeper and rockier, and then descend on the more gradual Marion Davis Trail. This approach can make the descent easier on your knees.
The terrain varies. The Wapack Trail section is known for being steeper, rockier, and can involve roots and boulders, with some scrambling in parts. In contrast, the Marion Davis Trail is generally more gradual and less rocky, though fallen leaves in autumn can make it slippery and hide uneven footing.
Yes, as this loop is located within Miller State Park, there is an entrance fee. You typically pay at the park entrance. No specific hiking permits are required beyond the park entrance fee.
While rated as an easy hike, the loop is considered moderate due to its elevation gain and rocky sections, especially on the Wapack Trail. It can be challenging for very young children, but motivated children can complete it. Beginners should be prepared for some strenuous sections and wear appropriate hiking footwear.
The trail offers rewarding scenery year-round. Fall is particularly beautiful with vibrant foliage. Spring and summer provide lush greenery. Winter hiking is possible but requires appropriate gear due to potential ice and snow, especially on the steeper Wapack Trail sections.
You'll find rewarding views throughout the hike. The Wapack Trail offers early glimpses of the valley. The Marion Davis Trail passes through a beautiful spruce forest. From the summit of Pack Monadnock Mountain, you'll enjoy expansive panoramic views, including Mount Monadnock, the White Mountains, and even the Boston skyline on a clear day. You can also climb the fire tower for even more far-reaching vistas.
Yes, dogs are generally allowed on the trails within Miller State Park, including this loop. However, they must be kept on a leash at all times to ensure the safety of wildlife and other hikers.
The loop typically starts at the bottom of the auto road in Miller State Park. There is parking available at the park entrance. Arriving earlier in the day, especially on weekends, is advisable to secure a spot.
Yes, the route primarily utilizes sections of the Wapack Trail and the Marion Davis Trail. It also briefly uses sections of the Summit Loop and Raymond Trail.
Yes, thanks to the auto road that also leads to the summit, you'll find facilities there. These include a gift store, restrooms, and picnic tables, making it a convenient spot to rest and enjoy the views.
Given the varied terrain, sturdy hiking boots are highly recommended. Layers are always a good idea, especially for the summit where it can be windier. Bring plenty of water, snacks, a map or navigation device, and be prepared for potentially slippery surfaces, particularly after rain or in autumn with fallen leaves.
Despite Komoot’s rating, this hike is NOT an easy hike due to extent of rock scrambling needed on the trail. I would rate this as intermediate, as those with mobility difficulties would find the trail impossible to walk. Steep both uphill and downhill in parts, with limited traction at times due to the trail conditions. I would recommend proper hiking boots for this hike. Views from the summit are fantastic, well worth the hike if you are physically able.
