Running

Today you will literally push the border during the trail run, because you are going to Germany! From the pleasant city of Aachen you then run back to Dutch soil and after 35.5 kilometers you reach Heerlen in Limburg.

Via forest paths and viewpoints on the Lousberg just outside Aachen you run between the fields to Burg Wilhelmstein. At this former fortress, a beautiful trail runs through the woods and along the water.

A few kilometers further on you will find another beautiful path if you follow the trail at Erenstein Castle. Make your trail even more adventurous by crossing the water on the stepping stones, or simply follow the path and enjoy the babbling water of the Anstelerbeek at your side.

At the Wilhelminaberg you face a steep climb, which is rewarded with a view of the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. After the descent you will meet the branches of the Caumerbeek. If you still have energy left, take a detour to the Schiffelerbeek to admire the beautiful forest ponds. Then you slowly enter the built-up area of Heerlen.

The Tour starts at Aachen Hauptbahnhof station (Aachen, Germany) and ends at Heerlen station (Netherlands). The route is therefore easily accessible by public transport. If you come by car, park near Aachen station and take the train back once in Heerlen. That will take you 25 minutes.

Yew Trail Lousberg

Highlight (Segment) • Forest

The central part of the Lousberg is characterized by a grove of yew trees. The dense vegetation and the deep green needles of the yew trees make the paths leading through appear like an impenetrable thicket. Yews often only grow as larger shrubs in this country, here they have grown into real trees.

Today the Lousberg is a local recreation area for many people in Aachen. Many joggers and walkers frolic on many paved paths after work and relax here from the stressful everyday life. Anyone who has mastered the rather strenuous climb by bike can then relax in a hammock in the sun.

It's not 230 meters high, but only 225 above NAP (Normaal Amsterdams Peil). The longest stair from the Netherlands, with more than 500 steps, leads to the top of this former mine-dump, from the mine called Wilhelmina, wich was situated in Terwinselen (Kerkrade).
